I'm a lord of the rings fan and Lego parent/collector. The price is plain bad for what you get. I enjoyed the build overall, it's a nice little diorama but I feel like there was more room for a better detailed set...the balrog feels a little clunky too. Hope there's a few more sets in the future
Lord of the Rings fans have been dying for a Balrog set and we finally have one. For some of us, we love it, for others, they are upset. I see both sides of the field on this issue.
For me personally, I think the Balrog is nearly flawless. It is scaled just right to minifig size, it has excellent shaping and design overall. Not to mention the horns are probably the best design for a Balrog compared to any MOCs (My Own Creation) out there in the LEGO universe.
Had LEGO made this more of a diorama it would have either been very cheap and simple, or it would have been so large and detailed that many fans would have been upset for having to pay a large sum of money for a grey blob of LEGO. And simply releasing the Balrog itself as a standalone wasn't going to happen.
The Nook's walls aren't present. Sure, could be better, but then the price would be higher? Instead, use some creativity and make your own walls perhaps.
Overall, it isn't a perfect set. But it is still a very good one and for piece to price ratio, it is not a rip off, especially considering the hidden licensing cost. Lets just be grateful that we finally have a Balrog and enjoy it!
The Balrog’s wings hook up to the flanges so they unfurl when you fold it out. Which is a neat touch, it looks pretty good folded out all the way. The price is a big ask though. Rivendell and Barad-Dur were excellent for the price, and I don’t like seeing this and the Shire set trending in the other direction.
Balrogs don't have wings! "The Balrog reached the bridge. Gandalf stood in the middle of the span ... His enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings ... suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall" The first mention is a simile, comparing the Balrog's shadows to wings, and the second mention references the first.
