This build was one to be called a memory and dream from when I was a boy. Glad to say I am an adult and can afford legos of LOTR when I was a child I could not.
It was a great build and will be sitting in between my copies of the Lord of the Rings books on my shelf. It would be nice if the ends of the book were closed in but I put taller books to close the sides in.
I was excited when I first heard about this set as it is one of my favorite scenes from the LOTR movies (just behind "what's taters, Precious?").
The Balrog build was enjoyable, a lot of cool building techniques I had not previously encountered with LEGO. Only iffy element was the wings, not sold on the thin, translucent membrane.
Regarding criticism of the open concept, I'm cool with it. I think it produces a neat, 360 street view look-in on the iconic moment and fits the landscape of the scene.
Only disappointment was the well-documented price gouge. OUCH! But given my investment in Rivendell, Barad-dur, and the Shire, there was no question I would be adding it to our LOTR LEGO display shelf.
After putting together a wonderful Sherlock Holmes Book Nook, LOTR is a let down.. from Balrog to the overall design, it's a let down & unsure why this would be considered a book nook. It looks incomplete.
The pictures of the set make it look okay, but it is much uglier in real life. The Balrog looks nothing like it did in the movie. It looks like a children's stuffed toy. Also, this thing is way overpriced. Would not recommend
