I was excited to buy this set because it’s the first time since reviving the LotR theme a set came out that isn’t so big you need a new piece of furniture to display and so expensive you need a bank loan to purchase.
Hopefully now Lego will produce a Chronicles of Narnia set/theme to go with Hogwarts and Moria.
All around it’s a nice set just too expensive for what it is. It looks nice but I feel like there has been a significant decline in the quality of Lord of the Rings legos. I hope Lego better incorporates the wants of their customers into future releases. I would love to see more Lord of the Rings sets similar in quality to Barad-Dur or Rivendell. A large scale Minas Tirith would be beautiful but a more impressive remakes of helms deep or orthanc would be wonderful as well. lord of the rings is by far my favorite line of legos and I hope they can continue.
I think this started out as a great concept, but fell way short. The unfinished sides, give it a flimsy appearance. I understand that the builder might have wanted the light to enhance the wings and fire structures, but it makes it less like a bookcase insert build than its counterparts. I do like the Gandolf minifigure, I feel like Sauron was left unfinished as well. He was hard to manipulate and pieces fall off easily. One wouldn't be able to play with it much because of this. You missed the mark on this one.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

As a massive Lord of the rings fan who is not able to afford the other Lord of the rings sets I was overjoyed to see a more affordable set being released of one of the most iconic scenes in the trilogy. I pre ordered this set day 1 and I am throughly pleased with it. The build quality great, it is a fun build and I love the techniques used to build up the rocks and pillars of the nook, it is also well engineered to fit the Blarog and stays in place very well. The Balrog is very dramatic looking and is almost perfect, I do not like the prominent gray piece used for the Balrogs chest and the tail leaves something to be desired however, the Balrog has great possibility and the mechanism for the wings is great. Gandalf is a good minigigure and is the only Lotr figure I have so I am very pleased with him. Overall, the set looks very effective when in either of the display options and the fire effect looks far better in person than on the pictures. Overall I would recommend as it is a great display piece and is a cheaper way to get a Lotr set which is not a brickhead and I hope Lego makes more in the future.
The Balrog are as a bit of a wonky build, I felt like some of the pieces would disconnect with a slight touch. The whip is a joke/ridculous. I also got a piece that makes the arm loose so he can’t hold it upright. I was excited to see a smaller LOTR set (since running out of space) but definitely overpriced. But obviously got it since I have the other LOTR sets.
