Reading the reviews for this product I came in with low expectations. While it is a bit of a finiky build, and doesn't feel very sturdy, I found it an enjoyable build and when used as a book nook (it sits in my bookshelf in my office), It gives the appearance of being much bigger and more complicated than it actually is which has a cool effect on the books it is tucked between. Overall, better than expected with my favorite part of this build being the way it integrates into my bookshelf.
Balrog looks great displayed next to Barad, Gandalf looks better than ever hanging out in another scene, and the build itself modified into a nice backdrop for yet another scene. As is, was not a fan though tbh.
It's very expensive for not very much. It's definitely an awesome looking set when viewed from afar but wasn't very impressive while building. You have to build the exact same thing twice when building the two "walls." It was very repetitive. I think my biggest complaint is the whip. It's pretty sad looking and cheap.
We all love LOTR and this set really pulled hit it off with the boys. for the cost... I'd give it a "C" just because it's known Lego has gotten expensive. But, for the reaction my kids gave when they saw the box and put it together... still an A+ reaction and they love the display. Not a complicated build, a little delicate but very good add to the collection.
First off, I was very intrigued and cautiously optimistic when this was announced several months ago. Then it was revealed not too long before it came out, and yeah, it looked disappointing for the hefty price. The Balrog is decent, but it needed more orange or better wings or something to make it more menacing. Also its arm joints have almost no friction so its arms fall down and rotate too easily. The sides being open just make it feel less substantial compared to the Sherlock Holmes book nook, also the fact this has only one reused figure doesn’t help with value much either. I really wanted to like this set, but it’s easily the worst new LOTR set yet. I hope this doesn’t mean no more cheap LOTR sets in the future because I’m sure some people would like to see more of those, hopefully with better value to them.
I was disappointed with the build of the Balrog - thought there could have been better detail throughout the build - especially on its back for an adult set. The reuse of the wings from another set was disappointing. I felt this was really overpriced for the value received.
