Terrible buckle design. Beware!

I bought this bag about a month ago and have since reviewed the bag giving it a 5 star review. The bag meets all of my needs and with the XXS Camera cube i can carry a nice Leica kit with several lenses. However, since that review I have almost dropped the bag twice due to the terrible design of the buckle. It only takes a very light touch to open the buckle and when adjusting its position on my shoulder it unintentionally opened. I have since superglued the buckle to prevent the dropping of thousands of dollars of equipment. I really wish PD would come up with a new buckle design on the strap. I would be first in line to purchase one.

Functional but Disappointing Fabric Wear
on April 14, 2025

I purchased the Outdoor Sling for a recent trip, and while I found the size to be just right and it comfortable to carry, I was disappointed to notice some pilling on the back fabric after just three weeks of use. This was unexpected, especially considering the great quality I've come to expect from other PD products. While the sling served its purpose during the trip, the fabric wear was a bit of a letdown.

Not safe for cameras

I purchased this sling through the Kickstarter campaign and have been using it regularly since it arrived. First and foremost, it’s a fantastic sling-lightweight, with just the right number of pockets and a perfect size. I use a lot of Peak Design products daily (backpacks, slings, camera gear, iPhone case). Not because I was a fan boy (though I am now), but because after trying gear from various brands, Peak Design’s products usually come out on top.
Unfortunately, that’s not the case with this sling. While I appreciate how well it integrates into the Peak Design system and works with the small camera cube, I find it unusable as a camera bag. The main issue is the buckle: it opens far too easily, requiring only slight pressure. On several occasions, it has opened accidentally, and only by luck did my camera avoid damage. This is especially risky when the camera is attached to the capture clip, as it could fall to the ground unprotected.
If this were any other brand, I might have given it two or three stars. However, since Peak Design has to hold up to its own high standards, giving more than one star wouldn’t be appropriate.

Great sling except for buckle and compartments
on May 31, 2025

I found a workable solution to fix the accidental buckle release issue.
I used a silicone cable strap to thread through the slit and the bottom hole of the buckle (see pictures). The thickness of the strap makes it much harder to press and release the buckle unless you intentionally press it really hard. Use a black color silicone strap and you can't really notice it's there so it won't affect the aesthetics. Also, you won't need to untie the silicone strap at all. Leave it there , it is just there to make it much harder to press the buckle release , but you can still press it when you intentionally want to.
If Peak Design is reading this, I think they should recall this strap buckle and replace it with a secure one for all current users (or at least offer a discount for a replacement that would fix this issue).
Now to the review of the sling bag:
I like PD products. This outdoor sling is a great lightweight sling.
The best thing about it is that it can be collapsed or expanded easily. The drawcord system last you expand or tighten the thickness of the bag. When tightened, it can be flat and contour to your body which is a great plus .
The weight is very light compared to another of my favorite brand bell - roy . However, the downside is the internal compartments organization. In the outer compartment, it is a bit too shallow and there is no internal partitions or pockets, it's only good for keys and ChapStick. In the main compartment, all the zippered and elastic pockets are concentrated on the inner side (the side close to your body). It would be better if there are some small pockets distributed on the other side of the bag. The issue is, after filling the small compartments INSIDE the zipper compartment, it's hard to fill the small compartments slots on the outside of the zipper compartment as they are all concentrated on one side.
The "stash pocket" is a good feature to store quick access items like your phone. It fits the biggest phone on the market right now and it doesn't fall out easily with the magnetic closure.
The strap is of high quality. And yes, I can see how the release button can be pressed by accident, so I would not use it for camera gear. See above for my personal solution to fix this accidental release issue. Technically, you could replace it with other PD straps using their anchor links system if you need a super secure strap.
The inclusion of multiple strap hooks are great for mounting other accessories and it's very flexible.
Overall, this is still an excellent sling. It's light weight and expandability offsets its shortcoming of less than idea compartments organization. Recommended.

Good bag but very bad buckle design

Got the bag on Feb. Been using them til now. Overall a good bag. But the bad design of the buckle really brings this to a 2 star. Don’t even remember that how many times the bag fell off cause the mis touch of the buckle. Lucky I catch it all the time. If you are going to carry a camera. Don’t get it. Not safe.

Disappointed despite loving other PD bags

My iPhone 15 Pro Max falls out of the suggested slot if I turn the bag upside down (even though the video tries to make clear that the slot opening is smaller than the inside). The magnet is very weak, and stays open with a moderate load out. Unfortunately I'll be returning it.

Super versatile

I brought this with extreme skepticism knowing what I have read about the sensitive buckle. I loaded mine with a Tenba byob 9 camera insert, Sony a7CR with 2 prime lenses. With these weights it requires a bit of pressure to release the plates, and the amount of travel the button needs to be push is just right.
Maybe PD has improved on the buckle, or maybe there were some QC issues, I dunno. Just happy mine works great because for an EDC, it is a nice buckle.
What I do know is this buckle design may be prone to bag snatchers, so I use a OpTech uniloop to secure the buckle when travelling in places a little more problematic.
And the other thing I know, is this is the only PD sling I like! I went back to Domke after so many branded bags, and decided to give this a go because of the softer materials. Only thing missing is a softer, more malleable camera insert for this bag to truly realised its potential. (I have one smaller and lighter than the tenba OTW that fits my setup)
The bag strap is also more comfortable than I remember, so I am happy with my purchase.

The buckle is way too easy to open accidentally.

This sling has a major weak point and that's the buckle. It's SOOO easy to just barely brush against it and it pops open. This happens to me ALL the time in both sling and waist modes, and then the sling and everything I have in it hits the ground.
It would be great except for that major issue.
