Year-long Test: Beware the Flap
on April 17, 2025

Here's my experience of a year of use. The stand and magnet to the phone are perfect for my lifestyle. The actual magnet for the cards is flimsy and causes mini heart attacks about once a month. When taking the phone out of my pocket, the flap will pull open and my cards go flying out of my pocket. If there were a version 2 and the magnet on the actual wallet were either stronger or functionally built differently, I would give this a 5/5. A small issue on the material, any colored material it rubs up against will bleed onto the wallet material.

I bought this as an accessory to my peak design pixel case and have been extremely happy with it. While the price point is more than many cases by itself, I find that for me the design and utility is very high. The clever card pocket pulls up for easier access and function than other wallet cases I have had. Furthermore, the design of the magnetic attach to be able to disconnect or stand the phone vertically or horizontal speaks to the thinking of the engineers. I just returned from a trip to Bulgaria and never felt like I had to worry about an unplanned disconnect or losing cards. I'm a big fan of Peak Design products and will invest in solutions that are built to last and add to my experiences and ways that bring smiles versus headaches.

Functional wallet stand

Stand works great, but wallet has some snagging issues with my card. Sometimes I can’t push the card in smoothly. I’m hoping this is a break-in issue or issue with my beat up credit card.

Use only if you want to lose your credit cards

I love Peak Design stuff and have purchased maybe 6 of their backpacks and shoulder bags plus a dozen straps, three iPhone cases and a bunch of things to connect the phone to. All are great, except for this one. A mobile wallet should do two things, (1) be mobile and (2) be a wallet that securely holds onto your cards. This item sadly does neither. I consider it not mobile because it adds hugely to the weight and bulk of the phone. That problem probably would not be too much of a concern for someone that carries their phone mostly in a bag, but it is a big concern for anyone carrying the phone in a pocket. The lack of security is due to the fact the item uses magnets only to hold the wallet onto the back of phone, eschewing for some reason the innovative and excellent mechanical locking port on the back of the phone case. The magnets are insufficient for two reasons: (1) while the magnets are strong enough to hold the phone on a non-moving support, like a Q-charger, they are not strong enough to hold the much lighter card case onto a moving phone, and (2) anyone who has attached two magnets together knows the way to separate them is to slide them apart, not pull them apart. Of course, the sliding motion used to pull the Phone case out of a pocket or pocketbook is exactly the motion needed to slip the wallet off the back of the case. This particular item was purchased so my wife could use the excellent PeakDesign leash neck strap with her phone and mobile wallet. Well, one does not need to walk further than 10 steps before the swinging phone on the leash wipes against the body, sliding the wallet off the camera case, where it falls to the ground, potentially lost forever with your cards. A TERRIBLE design. I have a design in my head that would cut the bulk and the weight in half AND securely hold the wallet to the back of the phone case. If PeakDesign wants to hear about my suggestions, they can contact me. If they use my idea, they can do so and I want nothing in return. All the best.

It's fine. Not great.

I've purchased thousands of dollars worth of gear from Peak Design over the years and I pretty much love everything I own. This wallet is the one thing that doesn't quite cut it. It's fine. But, the flap always ends up behind the cards. On several occasions I hadn't realized this and launched my credit cards across a store or restaurant. The cards don't quite go back into the wallet snug and I'm always fumbling with the flap at checkout. The good news is, I mostly use the phone to pay for everything these days, so I haven't needed to replace it. But, I keep hoping there will be an upgrade at some point.

With most of their products, PD knocks design and functionality out of the park. I bought this wallet and fairly happy but they haven't quite perfected the design. The magnet and card carrying capacity is top notch, the issue I run into is getting the cards back in the wallet and the magnetic closer tab wanting to get in behind the cards as you are putting credit cards back into the wallet. Seems this "lid" should be a bit more rigid so this would not happen. Otherwise it's a pretty solid product. One other wish or option would be for the wallet to attach to the PD phone case with it's locking mechanism. When I've dropped my phone, the wallet will most times detach from the phone and the cards will sometimes go flying out the magnetic "close flapper" due to the force of the drop.
