Took a while to settle in but now it is great

When I first put this together, even though the tuner was engaging the sound brick as designed the button only worked around half the time or less. I tried to take it apart and rebuild it a couple times, but nothing helped. However, after letting it sit for a few months, I think maybe the connections have set more solidly and it works almost every time.
The mid-'70s styling reminds me of the radio I had when I was a kid (although mine was black). I've been able to fool a couple friends with my phone playing inside. Great set, glad I bought it!
I would recommend this to a friend!

This was TOUGH

This was a cool build, but I had to rebuild it like 7 TIMES! The main step that screwed me up was the one where you had to put the L piece on the bottom. That was not a fun day. It’s cool when it’s completed though.

Very complicated

I followed all of the directions and double checked that I did them all correctly. It was a very complicated build, and I’ve been building legos for years. I can’t get the sound box to work, and when I put the back on, it all fell apart.

Made my day

I found this build to be quite fun. I love old radios! Seeing all the dials fully functional and the ability to make it come alive with a mini Bluetooth speaker just floored me. I love fully functional builds! I can use it everyday! Say what? Move over other Legos.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Do not wait to install the Sound Brick
on June 17, 2024

In what feels like a marketing decision, rather than what would be the most practical for the build, the Sound Brick installation is listed as the very last step. When you are building the internal components of the radio, which are the most technical and have the most moving parts, this is when you should install the Sound Brick. The second half of the build is the outer casing, the grill, the antenna, and the handle. If all of the internal mechanisms aren't clicking together properly, you will have to tear apart the build to assess what is wrong. Unfortunately, this is what I had to do. On my second attempt, it was still quite difficult to get all of the internal components working as advertised. There is no practical reason to install the Sound Brick last. You should only move onto the rest of the build once you are confident that all of the internal components are working. Following the instructions that listed the Sound Brick as the last step was a serious misstep in an otherwise interesting set. In the future, please prioritize practicality above all else.
When I first saw this set, I thought it was one of the least interesting and least relevant to me fandoms possible. But I was wrong. This set provided the best or second best building experience I have thus far gotten from following the product instructions (D&D being the primary competition to this). The few technical mechanics of this radio set were very precise and made me nervous because my hands are steady, but were sturdy at almost all stages of assembly. But overall this build was elegant and perfectly paced. The skill of the designer is well expressed here. The color was shocking at first but fits a surprising amount of modern decors. And, of course: the sound features. The gimmick of the sound brick feels appropriate here but I wish more snippets were included in the track list and/or more 70s/80s tracks, as the ones used resemble 30s/40s radio far more. But the phone-inside feature is what pushes this set over the edge post-building experience. This set becomes a practical item as it holds the phone quite strongly and in an upright position, so you can put on a podcast and close the back of the radio to direct the sound out of the front speaker grill, or you can leave the back open and the radio serves as a pop socket replacement. Truly an unexpectedly masterpiece set.

Functions explained poorly, mostly tedious build

I wanted to like this set, but it was one of the bigger Lego disappointments I've had in the while. First of all, I expected the sound brick would have Bluetooth functionality, rather than just playing random sound clips. Ad copy may have later been updated to clarify this, but I didn't notice before I purchased it. I probably wouldn't have paid full price for a set with this part count if I realized the new sound brick had no more audio functionality than the toys that have been given away in cereal boxes and fast food kids meals for decades.
Normally, I enjoy discovering the reasons for design choices gradually through a build, but I found the building process unusually tedious because the directed placement of so many pieces seemed arbitrary. I prefer designs that are as elegant on the inside as out, but this one really felt like it came from a spare parts bin up until the exterior "skin" went on.
The most frustrating aspect is that the graphical instructions were ambiguous about how the moving parts were intended to work, which was important because operation is unlike an old radio. The tuning knob does not spin freely when the power knob is set to on. It moves a little and then hits resistance. When this happened I stopped turning to avoid damaging the mechanism, and I was frustrated that the sound brick wasn't working. I thought I built it wrong, so I disassembled and reassembled it before realized it was not intended to turn and I needed to apply MORE force to the immobile knob to activate the sound brick.
Disassembling the set was also annoying because the build process included an irreversible step (#233). The inserted pins are flush with the sides of the radio and can't simply be pulled out. Instead, I had to break apart the surrounding pieces to access these parts in different way.
