ROG STRIX Z890-E

ROG STRIX Z890-E Gaming WIFI Motherboard is the latest in a great line of motherboards, but it leaves you flat when you are looking for PCI-e slots for peripherals - only has 2. One is PCI-e 5.0 x 16, and the other is PCI-e 4.0x16, leaving you to figure out how to add anything else outside of the NVME SDDs they give you 7 slots for. 3 for 5.0 x 4, and 4 for 4.0 x 4 NVME SDDs. The problem here is 2 of the 5.0 slots are sharing resources with the PCI-e 5.0 x 16 meant for a high-end video card, so you end up having to throttle back your video to use the latest SDDs or use a lesser set of SDDs on the other 4 slots. I should have read the fine print before purchasing this one, but I have it now, and outside of throttling my new video card, it is a nice motherboard. It has the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard, and has ample room for DDR-5 RAM, but you really have to pay attention to the manufacturer, type and speed of the RAM before you plunk down some cash on this. It states up to 256 Gigabytes of RAM, but the QVL list only has a few options at the 96 Gigabyte level. One with Corsair with 4- 24 Gigabyte sticks, and the rest require one or two slots only. Yes there are plenty of vendors and RAM speeds available in the QVL list, but when you look for an option, there are few available to be purchased. I went with 2 G Skill sticks of 48 Gigabyte RAM at 6400 MT/s, thinking that maybe they will add this particular set for upgrading in a later BIOS update to allow me to up the ante to 192 Gigabytes by filling the other 2 slots left on the motherboard. With AI being the main reason for getting this latest iteration with an Intel i-9 Ultra (2nd Gen) 65 Watt CPU, I also had to pay attention to what RAM can be used with this CPU, a first for me to have to worry about, and I am sure any of you amateur computer builders out there like me will read the fine print on that one. So, no I could not get the highest speed RAM, nor is the new STRIX Z890-E able to actually use 256 Gigabytes of RAM based on the limitations set by both their own BIOS limitations as well as the latest Intel CPUs when comparison shopping for compatible RAM. All in all, it is a pretty good motherboard barring all the limitations noted above. Maybe a ROG Hero would be a better option?

As a gamer what I look for in a motherboard is power, storage, IO connections, and Ram upgrade. I get all of that and more with this board. It has the best Bio software of all companies out there. Easy to use and with AI helping as needed if you chose to use it! with 7 M.2's (3 Gen 5, and 4 Gen 4) for storage the most in all Z890 motherboards out there is fantastic. I have no problems with this board, and it looks great in my system. You will not go wrong with this motherboard!

My z890 gaming e died on me after 3 months, maybe I got a bad unit? I loved the features and ascetics of the board but I would recommend going with other options.

Dear CameronRead,

Thank you for your comment.

We do understand your disappointment with this motherboard and the inconvenience this may have caused if it stop working after 3 months of usage. If the system will no longer boot up or power on, please do the following. Verify if the power supply unit, hardrive, RAM and CPU are still working properly. Check if the PC was properly connected to a working surge protector or AC outlet and the power button is being pressed all the way down to trigger a power on signal. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I will be more than happy to help. Or you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent from the link: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/1135/.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Regards,

Rodel

I've owned many MB's... Mostly stuck with Asus, and this one is by far the best one of all the builds I've done. All the bells and whistles...setup was a breeze... And so easy to update. Glad I splurged and spent the extra money on this board.
