The software could be easier to understand some of the questions for non-accounting personnel, but my biggest problem with H&R Block software is that in earlier versions the software use to let me know that I would save money filing individually vs. jointly with my wife. I have seen this pop up at some point prior to filing. The current program does not seem to do this, I know I probably would be a lot better off filing individually but I would like the program to let me know. I will need to look into Turbo Tax to see if that program does this...
Pros: Easy to import documents
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to prepare

Having used H&R software most years, I followed the interview questions resulting in approval at the final result. I soon received a letter from the IRS indicating that they were not impressed with my entry. They matched some of their numbers with my numbers and they are different. With their input to either accept their version or fight the process, it seems I need help. This doesn't seem to fit in the typical review process.

The software is great. I have used H&R Block tax software for many years so it’s easy to use. Screens are familiar and the program brings in historical data. I also do my son’s and daughter’s returns so everyone’s returns are conveniently located in one place and program allows for multiple returns.
Even though I paid for the software online, I didn’t get an email with the activation code, so I had to call to get the code.
I volunteer for AARP Tax-Aid and and their program is not as easy to use.

The program worked as expected, except when i went to submit to the IRS, it kept rejecting it. I checked all my figures, and they were all correct, but it still was rejected. I had to scramble to mail a hard copy, very inconvenient.

This was my first year to do a tax return involving the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from my IRA. I was able to complete the necessary entries as well as including the Qualified Charitable Distribution. I found that even though the software put the entries into the correct places on the final return, it was difficult to go back and find the information. The software needs to include an easier way to find the worksheet/page for RMDs. It took me quite a while to locate the information to verify my entries.
Pros: Maximizes refund
Cons: Hard to prepare
