I've been using H&R Block software to do my tax returns for many years now. It took a couple of years to learn the idiosyncrasies of the software. It all has worked so consistently well for all this time.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents

I've been using HRBlock since it was "Tax Cut", have noticed declining quality in the past 3 years, and next year intend to use TurboTax or a local professional. This year, my e-file was rejected because there was no record of me filing last year. I know it was sent. I suggest you rather than relying on the customer to re-open the program to check on the filing status, you send an automatic email in addition with the same information. I had previously discovered when filing a 1040X for a previous year, that the program apparently used the current year tax brackets instead of the previous year tax brackets. This year the, the program's K1 analysis gave me carry over values to put in the 1065 but this year there was no 1065 in the forms list so, if I want the carry overs, I will have to get a better tax program or a human to fix it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The portion of the program dealing with IRA Required Minimum Distribution got so screwed up, with no way back out, that I need to delete the file itself, start the whole form all over again, and then finally figure out how to tell the system that I received a distribution exactly equal to the RMD, and that there was no penalty involved. In addition, the 1040 payment process must have been developed by someone who never actually had to use the payment process. For something that should have been a very basic transaction, it turned into what was one of the most confusing payment processes I've ever gone through. A 2-star rating is being generous. Will probably switch to a new vendor next year.

I typically buy the software in December, and enter my information as available, while performing program updates as available. I can normally confirm my outcome by early February, shortly after having received all of my source documents and forms, though some risk remains until the software is finalized. Fortunately, the late changes are generally on esoteric topics and don't impact me.
