The greatest value of this software is that it takes you through a process by which you are directed to enter the information that applies to you and it incorporates the forms you need. And it does this reasonably well. But a good portion of the process is really exasperating.
The importing of 1099-B forms is faulty, resulting in an incomplete import. The field in the software for the QUANTITY/CUSIP/SYMBOL is 32 characters long. On my 1099-B forms, the QUANTITY value had three decimal places (i.e., 23.000). The software added something like 12 zeros after every one of the QUANTITY values, making the entire string longer than 32 characters - meaning it wouldn't fit in the software field. The result? EVERY ONE of the SYMBOL values was truncated. You have to go into the list of transactions and correct EVERY LAST ONE by completing the truncated SYMBOL value. But you have to delete the extra zeros from the QUANTITY value first. So utterly exasperating.
Also, you don't find this out until you do the accuracy check! This problem needs to be corrected.
When you import the Federal information to the State return, the software does not import ownership of the 1099-B values. This despite the fact that on the Federal portion you enter the values by OWNER. Why this does not carry over to the State return is utterly inexplicable.
The accuracy check does not always identify what item needs to be corrected. This goes for imported forms as well as manually entered forms. I can't recall which form needed a random code (such as a state code - 1099-DIV, maybe?) which I found simply by checking every single value in the software to the form I had in hand. I found one blank field and entered the value from my own form. This corrected it, but if the software knew a value was missing, why couldn't it TELL ME which one????
The accuracy check leaves warnings even after you have accepted or authenticated the item being checked. The software oh-so-helpfully tells you that these warnings are just "reminders", and they may not need to be corrected. So why doesn't it indicate what your decision was is on the item being checked - so you can then choose to ignore the warning? You know, so you can move on in confidence.
The questions regarding the source of an inherited IRA do not include the right questions - such as whether it was inherited from a parent. So the conclusions reached by the algorithm are incorrect. It also incorrectly concludes that that IRA must have been inherited in the tax year in which you took a RMD. (This of course is not necessarily the case.) It also keeps telling me that I owe a penalty on "excess accumulation", even though the distribution I took was more than the RMD. And it keeps giving error messages after I verify the data! I think it is using RMD values to populate Form 5329 - which the IRS plainly states IS NOT REQUIRED if you meet the RMD rules (which I did).
At the end of the section for inherited IRAs, it tells you that you will need a statement regarding "estate tax paid," along with a statement on how it was calculated. But it doesn't tell you how this information is to used or where it needs to be entered.
The idiotic process of entering income from 1099-NECs does not tell you that you need to upload said 1099-NECs while you're in that section. It waits until you get all the way through to the point of finally submitting the package to the IRS and the State. Then it tells you that you need to upload "Income Summary Statements." At that point, I felt like smacking somebody. First of all, what is an "Income Summary Statement"? And why oh why doesn't it tell you which one(s)? It should tell you that you need to upload a 1099-NEC for each instance of income reported on one. I mean, if I've reported income from a W-2, tell me that I need to upload a W-2. Same for any other form from which I've reported income. It simply can't be that hard to do because the software is already keeping track of this information.
This is what I can recall off the top of my head. If a data-processing software program cannot properly process and manage the very data it's meant for, I consider it not fit for service. As I said before, it's helpful to guide you to, and to prepare, the forms you need. But in light of the need to correct so many faulty data imports and similar fields, I simply cannot recommend this software.
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to import documents
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
