I had a simple question about a 1099-R form, contacted Block, they could not answer! There also was no question about receiving a 1099-R. I had to google it to find out what to do!! I think I will move away from Block next year.
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The H&R Block tax tool works exactly as advertised. Easy to download. I like that all my personal data from the previous year is transferred to the latest update. Once you have all your tax info for the year at hand, the tool is an easy guide to fill in the current tax year data. The tool also checks your work and alerts you to any potential issues with the information that you have input into the tool. Overall it makes the process quick and painless.

Overall, I'm happy with the tax software, but I was disappointed that when completing the State/Local tax return, it does not ask about credit for the days I worked from home last year. City of Detroit allows filers to get credit for the days not worked in the city (for those who work-from-home partially) by completing part 3 of Form 5121. But the tax software makes no mention of it. It will complete Form 5119 but that's it. I feel that the software should ask about WFH days and complete Form 5121 also. I had to download and complete Form 5121 separately, then print and attach it to the Detroit return. Maybe next year you can include this. Please let me know if you have any questions about this matter.
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund

Overall, I like the software. I feel like it is actually helpful and makes sure you have all your information entered. HOWEVER, it would be nice if after I saved my information and then added a piece of information I didn't have previously, say for a Schedule C business expense, that I did not have to go through the rest of the 'interview' process for the entire return all over again. THAT I could skip.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents
Cons: Time consuming

Used the interview process to quickly create my now simple return. very efficient. Two complaints - it was very difficult to break out and then return to the same spot when I needed to do so. Second, I needed to send a check to the IRS, but the software did not lead me to the proper form for the payment. This should have been far simpler, or automatic.
