It double charged me for an extension that the IRS DENIED I fixed it and it charged me again and won’t refund my money horrible!!! I’ve used it for 20 yrs never again
Great value! Would like an easy way to take the standard discount though. But I probably missed something. A few areas I was uncertain about still. But you have some free support to take advantage of which I didn’t use. Recommended.

Fell short of expectations

The IRS added a requirement regarding K-1 basis calculation on Form E line 28 in 2018. The software doesn't have this capability. The capability needs to be added in order to e-file a complete return.. I will not buy HR Block 2020 tax prep software if this capability isn't built in. I've been using your software for many years and have been happy with it. I will be forced to switch if I can no longer complete and e-file my return with your software.
Pros: Fast
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to prepare, Hard to import documents

Excellent Tax Prep Software at affordable price

I have always used a Tax Pro for my previous year(s) tax preparations. This year I decided to use H&R Block Deluxe given my situation includes married filing jointly, W2s, IRA deductions and 1099-INT. I was confused between H&R Block and TurboTax but then I did some comparison and decided to go with H&R Block because at the time when I purchased this software, H&R Block was cheaper than TurboTax, it has in-person audit support for desktop version and in case of audit, I can go to its nationwide brick-and-mortar locations for help as opposed to talking to someone over the phone (offshore) with TurboTax.
Using the software: It was super easy to import my W2 using its "Import from Employer" feature. However, my wifes' payroll provider does not work with H&R Block so I tried to upload PDF of W2 but PDF upload was unsuccessful. So, I had to type in all information manually which took no more than 10 minutes. Its not a big deal for me but I wish H&R Block improves this feature in future. I highly recommend this software for someone whose Tax filing situation is straight forward because all you need is about an hour to prepare and file your return with this software.
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to fix issues, Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import, Fast

Huge Problem

The IRS gave me a PIN to use, and your software did not prompt me to enter it. This should be one of the regular questions since so many people have suffered identity theft. I filed and was rejected. Then the rejection report described how to enter the pin. This should have been a question as part of the filling out of forms.

Since 2001, I had been a loyal user of another tax software program (TaxAct), but their prices have skyrocketed, and I felt betrayed, and looked for alternatives. I was very impressed with the fact that you have a Federal Only option, as I don't need a state return where I live, and hate paying for access I don't require.
Overall, I found your program quite comparable and easy to navigate compared to the one I was accustomed to. The import of information from last year's PDF worked well, and nothing much surprised me along the way.
I felt that the user interface, while reasonably clean, was a bit dull, but effective nonetheless. One feature I really missed from my old program was the ability to have a scratchpad on virtually any entry box. For example, if I was needing to total up some contributions I had made, I could open a scratchpad, and put the dates, titles, and amounts, and upon closing, it would put the sum total in the box... extremely handy and sorely absent here. The most lacking feature was with charitable donations... there were plenty of item valuations available, and the option to add your own was there, but the user interface was absolutely terrible... like one, long list with every item notched into a table. This needs improvement.
I was about to give the program 5 stars, until it came to filing my return. On the screen where you have to input the prior year's AGI, it pre-filled a ridiculous value (over $1M), saying that it transferred this in since "you filed with us last year." I didn't file with them last year, and I don't know where that number came from. We initially freaked out because the field didn't seem editable, but there was a link to the right explaining how to override the pre-populated value.
Add some more features (like the scratchpad), and tighten up some of the user interface aspects, and it'll be 5-stars next year for sure!
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to fix issues

Tax Software Works Well, PDF Software is Junk
on March 7, 2018

I have been using H&R Block tax software for the last 8 years and have been pretty happy with it. The tax preparation portion works well. When it comes to printing, though, it is a mixed bag. Printing to paper works great, and looks nice - very professional. However, the PDF printer software (PDF995) that comes with the tax software is totally worthless. Each time I use it (whether with the tax software or with some other application) it either crashes the application or creates a PDF file that is missing most all the text in the document. And it has done the same thing every year. Why does H&R Block keep including it with the tax software? I don't know. It just frustrates me.
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to prepare, Easy to import
