great features and excellent quality, very heavy

excellently constructed item. 45L mode was excellent for long distance travel with my things and camera gear. 35L mode was perfect for flights and fitting it under the seat. 30L was excellent for on-campus commute as a college student.
The only two downsides are, one it is very heavy. Two, the backpack straps aren't very comfortable.

Looking Good in Italy for 12 Days
on May 16, 2023

Bag has all needed features but this is not that detail kind of review. Here is the real deal…
My wife and I like to travel and used to do it a lot. We are a bit rusty because we have two little kids but we decided we were going to Italy for 12 days, just us, anniversary trip. Now, I like efficiency and she, well she likes to look good (which I’m a fan of) but looking good requires many things like outfits and toiletries etc… All I can think is roller bags in Italy which means trains and ferries, taxis and buses, stairs and cobble stones and I started sweating sitting right here on my couch. So I searched google for best non “backpacking” backpack and found peak designs. I ordered two of everything backpacks, packing cubes, toiletry kits, shoe bags etc. let’s say I went the distance.
Bags came in the mail and when I opened them my wife was more than a bit skeptical. She was unsure if “looking good” could fit in that one bag but we committed to try. Using the “system” of packing cubes it was amazing what we got in those bags all while remaining efficient. So much so that when we left for the airport my brother asked “is that ALL you guys are taking?!” Off we went. She checked hers and I carried mine on. They check like a dream because the back straps hide away with magnets. No issues carrying it on we get to Italy and what I imagined was real.
We carried them through the streets of Rome, stuffed them overhead on trains, put them under seats on ferries, hauled them up at least a million steps on the Almafi coast, Carried them through cobblestone ally’s of Venice. All the while passing those sorry looking travelers shlepping two oversized roller bags. And I realized, we looked good.
Then we went shopping and added more stuff to the mix. This time I was skeptical, but wouldn’t you know it all that stuff just kept fitting into this expandable contraption. The only issue was that my wife started making fun of me because every time I saw any other peak designs products out and about I pointed them out and expressed how those people had great taste. Can you believe that she called me a “bag nerd” but I’m cool with it.
After 12 days of feeling just slightly superior we returned home and the skepticism is now gone. I overheard my wife FaceTiming about the trip last night and she started showing off her backpack and called it a “miracle bag.”
All in all I couldn’t be happier. Great product made by some serious “bag nerds” who I’m sure would love to help you look good wherever it is you are off to next.
Thanks Peak Designs. (I have no relationship with these people, just a fan of the bags)
I would recommend this to a friend!

My perfect bag!
on March 7, 2019

So far, I've taken this bag on 2 week long trips, and a handful of other 1-3 day trips and it has performed perfectly in every scenario I've thrown at it. The first thing I will mention is that I always pack it out with at least the small camera cube. For one of the week long trips, I took a medium cube packed fully with camera gear, and all the necessary clothes/toiletries/etc for a week away and while it was a tight squeeze, I was able to make it work!
The most pleasant surprise about this bag has been how well it fits on domestic flights in the US. I've been able to stash it underneath the seat when the overhead is full, it fits in overheads EASILY. I've taken it on the small turbo prop planes (Saab SF340) and it fit nicely in the overhead (sideways of course). I've taken it on the larger (think ATR 72) and while it probably could've fit in the seat in front of me, it got stashed in the overhead easily!
I love this flexibility because I do not want to have to gate check my one bag with my expensive camera gear, laptop, tablet, etc. and risk it being lost or damaged.
Even with the relatively heavy loads I carry around with all of the gear inside, the straps are super comfortable. The HUGE side pockets are just killer, you can literally put anything in them. Because of the zip down back access to the camera compartment, I have taken to using this in the buttoned down mode when I take my full camera kit somewhere. It's basically replaced my everyday bag!

Great travel bag
on March 21, 2019

This bag has so far met all my needs during my travels. I've used it as my primary personal bad when flying and have also used it on a 1-3 day trips. I have yet to try to put it under my seat on a flight, but it fits great in the overhead compartment. Love how the straps can be tucked away so that it doesn't get snagged or caught on anything when not in use. All the pockets are useful and the side pockets fits my large hydro flash without any issues. Overall very comfortable no matter the load.
I've gotten the backpack a bit dirty and haven't attempted to clean it yet. Supposedly it's easy to clean with a wet rag, but I haven't tried yet.
The major issue I had was that the sternum strap kept coming loose. Eventually the time I didn't pay attention to it when it was store away on the shoulder strap, I lost the sternum strap. I'll have to replace it by purchasing a new one.

Everyday Use
on April 17, 2019

I have the everyday backpack for my camera stuff and love it. I had a disaster with another (who will not be named) manufacturer's bag for my work use, so then took the plunge and ordered this, a tech, packing cubes and just to cap it off the medium camera cube. It is so versatile for everyday use, but for a short travel with the cubes, or if I refashion it I can get all my camera stuff in it for a big shoot. It is great quality. And to get away from the blacks and charcoal, I went all Sage this time and it is growing on me! Really recommend this: it will last for ages.

Versatile and flexible

I just got back from a 10 day trip to Maine using the travel backpack as my only bag. I carried a mirrorless camera, a full sized tripod and enough other stuff for the entire trip. The bag fit into every overhead compartment, even on a relatively small jet where people with roller bags had to check them.
While in Maine, I used the bag as my camera bag while hiking in the mountains or traveling through Portland. Being able to snap it down to smaller profile was nice. Its a little big, but not too bad. It left space for rain gear and a heavier jacket.
The front compartment was very convenient for accessing small items during travel and the side access for the camera was obviously useful as well.
The waist strap isn't the best, but it was good enough while hiking. The fastener on it, though, could stand improvement.
Overall I would highly recommend this pack. It is as good as advertised.

Awesome bag

I've previously own the Peak Design 20L everyday bag and try to use it for a camera bag and a everyday bag, but it was too small and cramp for all the stuff I have in the bag. When the Travel line announce on kickstarter, I ordered it immediately. This bag is the best bag I've ever use and own, the adjustable size of the bag is super handy and the cubes accessories that compatible with the bag are just amazing.

Travel Backpack and Camera Cubes
on September 9, 2019

I been using the Travel Backpak and Camera Cubes for about 4 weeks now. I have a variety of cubes and backpacks, the Peak Design system is far and above the my favorite, best designed and most highly crafted of anything I've seen on the market. The multi-layer dividers make it the perfect system for mirrorless too - giving you the ability to stack small prime lenses in the case without sacrificing valuable space. The Medium / Small cube combo fits perfectly within the pack leaving just a bit of room at the top for a smaller item like sunglasses.
PRO TIP: I keep a second lens, my 100mm filter kit, remote triggers, batteries and cards, in the small cube. Adding an anchor link to each end, I can attach my Slide Lite and have all of that gear at my disposal once I'm on location.
