My working backpack

This has been my best and most used backpack. While I was a wedding photographer - I loved "essentials only" approach for my gear and this backpack was a perfect fit. Also great for travel with easy access and space for everything i need

Long Term of Taller (6'6") Traveler
on April 29, 2021

Some details that I appreciate: I use it as my luggage for most travel. I use the larger packing cube (dress pants, dress shirts), the smaller packing cube (underwear, socks, PJs, work out clothes) and the wash bag (meds, toiletries). With this system I can squeeze a weeklong trip into the bag. All three fit in snuggly along with my laptop and an extra pair of shoes. For flights I carry on the bag and have never had a problem. I don't carry another bag or brief case. I lay it in face up in the overhead bin (I don't like stuff at my feet) and can access the top inside storage pocket where I keep snacks, cords, battery, headphones, keys). A water bottle fits nicely in the side pocket. The shoulder and belt straps tuck in well. The little pocket on top is for phone, gum, passport and receipts. I'm 6'6" and the bag carries nicely on my back. It stands up on it's own and I can balance a sandwich or a cup of coffee on top of it while I'm waiting on a flight and trying not to take up more than one seat in the airport. I have used the bag for hiking when I can snag a quick shot to a nice trail while I'm on the road. I rarely fully expand the bag. I rarely use the side panels zippers for access to anything. Honest drawbacks: if the bag is full to the brim it does weigh on my shoulders while I stand unnecessarily long at the gate, but that is the trade off of not having a rolling bag. I have tried to use it as my daily, but it is a bit too big and bulky to pass elegantly.

I thought this bag was going to be over engineered for my needs, but in actual use, it's a joy, and I use almost everything. Solid as a rock, adaptable to different situations, confortable to use... Love it.

Bought a Lot of Modern Travel Backpacks; Keep Coming Back to This One
on May 15, 2021

I bought this back when it was Kickstarter for the modular camera cubes, packing cubes, pouches. I've also bought a lot of travel camera backpacks featured on Youtube from companies like Nomatic, Minaal, Aer and GORUCK. This is the one I always end up going back to. I like the comfortable, stoway backpack straps and carrying handles. It is light enough, giving its features. Easy to make one large compartment. External lash straps are flexible. The bag does not expand so large it won't fit in a plane's overhead bin --- which could be a drawback for some not flying; but, if I got to that point, I should consider a 60L hiking backpack. Very durable; still looks as good as the day I bought it.

Great Backpack, but...
on May 16, 2021

This backpack is versatile and can fit a lot of gear, I just went on a photography trip and took 2 DSLR camera bodies, 3 lens (16-35 f/2.8, 24-105 f/4 and 70-200 f/2.8) they all fit inside the medium camera cube as well as a drone, laptop, tablet, a PD tech pouch, plus a 100-400 mm f4.5-7.1 as well as other accessories plus a PD tripod! It all fit! Mind you it weighed in at 35+ lbs!! Lugging this baby through the airport was a task and I really had to substantially lighten the load in the "daypack mode" to carry it for 4-6 hr periods. The padding on the shoulder is well made and "comfortable". The side access really is a hit and miss. If the pack is fully packed, the side access is hard to unzip let alone zip from a standing position ( you need to place the bag on the ground to zip the side access when fully loaded). So I ended up using it more as a storage bag. When I needed to change lens or camera body. I would take it off, put it on the ground and access the camera cube (medium) from the back panel.
The overall build quality is exceptional. My biggest gripe is the sternum strap. The design thesis is a bit flawed. In the "field", it doesn't work very well. Trying to find where to clip it in the shoulder strap is a bit of a task in warm weather let alone in cold weather. I would rather prefer that the sternum strap have a traditional buckle in the middle. When its cold and you have gloves, jacket, etc. trying to clip on the sternum strap is VERY DIFFICULT.

Peak Design’s 45L Travel Backpack has been a great addition to my accessories, so much so, that it has replaced all other (since donated) carryons I once utilized for my travels. Its sleek, fully accessible, and sturdy craftsmanship makes for a comfortable fit, and all around customizable staple for anyone on the go.

Almost perfect

I love everything about this bag but the waist belt - I wish that were a standard clip. The bag is sturdy, well designed, and functional. I have no problem with the sternum strap or zippers. The waist belt closes with a hook though, which I find annoying when I put on and take off the pack. If that were changed to a plastic clip like most every other pack then I'd give this bag five stars.
