Fine Router for Average Size Home/Common Usage

This is my third ASUS router. The first developed a spring problem with the on/off switch which was a known issue for that model; the second was fried in an electrical storm. But, they both functioned perfectly and has a nice user interface. So, when I needed another router, I really didn't look any further after a technician alerted me I should be looking for an "ax" router. I live in a bi-level home with about 1,250 sq ft of living space on each level. Only two people with demands on the wi-fi. Need wi-fi to the TV, audio receiver, Roku units on three upstairs TV's, Alexa, phones, tablets, laptop, security cameras, garage door opener, and an occasional guest. Of course, not all devices make demands all at the same time. I get an acceptable signal when I'm on the outside back deck or in the attached garage. The most distant device is a camera outside the garage which is about 40 ft through concrete block wall and two wood stud walls and I have two out of three bars of signal to that device. I have a wi-fi analyzer to view the signal strength in all parts of the house and get a "green" virtually everywhere. However, the speed delivered is different depending on the band being used. Many recommend naming both bands the same and letting the device select which band is best. However, I don't do that. I first identified an acceptable signal, and then tested the through speed for each device in each area and then set each device to use the band that delivers the fastest speed. The main TV and audio receiver in the family room is next room to the router so I set them to use the 5GHz band. The iPhones seem to work best on the 5GHz band, and I let virtually all the other devices use the 2.4GHz band. In a perfect world, with all devices in the house up-to-date with the latest/greatest wi-fi technology, then I'd consider giving both bands the same name and just let the device pick the best band. In the month this device has been installed, it hasn't missed a beat. Can be installed and used by it's defaults. User interface is very similar to previous ASUS interfaces except for an appearance facelift. I'd say this router is just fine for a house the size of mine and satisfies the needs of common wi-fi usage. Sure, I'd buy it again.

this is my third asus router - I finished the basement and added this as an ai-mesh node. Very easy to add to the mesh and works as advertised. Throughput is identical to the master router and the other node.
I would recommend this to a friend!

This router was purchased to serve as an extention on our local network, it lacked basic settings to support the primary router in its job and ultimately died just a short time after the end of the warranty period. If you are hoping for a reliable product to last a few years, this isn't it.

Does not work with Airmesh. Updated firmware. Place By the RT AX3000. Initialize Airmesh. AX 1800. Connects. Power down the AX1800 to move. AX1800 won’t re- connect to the AX3000 even setting side by side.

This router would not become a mesh node!

This router would not become a mesh node on my RT-AC5300! I have other ASUS products that added without issue but this one never worked. I called support and they eventually hung up. In the end, I returned the product and gave up on ASUS. I installed and eero Pro 6E and everything works better.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
