Good old style washer, but has some flaws

This is a good old style washer, but it has a couple of flaws, one of which is potentially serious depending on how the machine is used. First of all, the washing performance is excellent when setting the appropriate water level and NOT using the Normal Eco cycle. With the Mixed cycle option, for example, the clothes get clean and smell clean, unlike my experience with a highly rated HE washer. The agitator performance is excellent (search the internet for a demo). Also, an entire cycle completes in about 30 minutes with the clothes rapidly spun so that drying should only take around another 30 minutes in a decent dryer. This can make laundry time quick and efficient. The washer panels are heavier gauge steel than on the typical washer and the knobs are metal, but the fit and finish of the panels is below average. I suspect most people will still find this to be acceptable.
Now for the flaws: If the pause button is pressed or lid opened during the water fill stage (to add clothes, detergent, bleach, etc.), a reset of sorts can occur. The status and power lights will go out for about 10 seconds and turn back on. When this happens, the tub will only fill to a shallow depth, regardless of the water level setting. Subsequently, the rinse stage will also use a shallow water depth, producing poor washing and rinsing results for large loads. This problem appears to occur randomly when interrupting the cycle, but seems to happen more readily after around 6 inches of water has been added. The way to avoid this problem is to put everything in before starting the washer, and let it finish without interrupting the cycle by pressing the pause button or opening the lid, despite the user manual stating this may be done. If your method of using the washer requires you to open the lid after it is started, you are occasionally going to experience this problem. I originally thought this issue was the result of a defective unit, so the store exchanged my washer with another one, but it also has the same problem. Another flaw is that whatever the knob settings are at when the washer starts are the settings used for the entire cycle, even if they are changed right after the unit is started. For example, changing the fill level, water temperature or adding an extra rinse will have no effect after the washer is started. If you want to change a setting after you push start, you must cancel the cycle and start over. Both of these flaws are probably software/firmware related.
If the flaws don't get you, this is probably one of the best performing washers on the market. If you are considering this unit to use in the Normal Eco mode, which automatically sets the water level, you will likely be disappointed. Consumers rated the predecessor to this model at the absolute bottom of the list with that cycle option. Then again, maybe they encountered a shallow water fill bug by opening the lid during the fill stage to check the progress.
There appear to be two identical versions of this washer, and one comes with a significantly longer warranty than the other, 5yr versus 1y. If you are planning to buy this washer, check your local appliance stores for model MVWP586GW, the one with the longer warranty. It won't necessarily cost more.

Great Washer

Don't fall fot the maytag name and warranty

We purchased this machine 4 years ago because of the simplicity, heavy duty look and the warranty. We have had it serviced 6 times and it needs it again. The plastic hub on top the transmission keeps stripping out and it won't spin out. That has happened four times along with the belt and control panel being replaced. The hub stripping is a well known problem but has not been addressed. Is there a lemon law on washing machines?
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Works great, disappointing warranty

I was going to get the old commercial models until I saw the new models had just been released. I'm pretty happy with the new features. Unfortunately I didn't notice the warranty was reduced from five years to just one. That's objectively worse and disappointing.

Looking to buy, but warranty is insufficient

My commercial grade Maytag washer died after 20 years of service. I was looking to replace it, but there is no way I'm purchasing a "commercial grade" washer with less than a 5 year warrantee. Why doesn't Maytag stand behind their products anymore?

This washer does the job!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used to own a laundromat and I’m accustomed to commercial laundry machines that do their jobs quickly and with a minimum of trouble. Unfortunately most residential machines today are heavy on high tech features and light on capability, this machine is just the opposite and it really gets the job done. Thanks Maytag!
