As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get the opportunity to test out gear from our awesome partners from time to time. This time, I was able to test out the Midland MXT275 MicroMobile base station. I have also had the opportunity to test out another product from Midland (the X-TALKER T51X3VP3 Two-Way Radio) which we used when testing out the base station. My husband and I installed this in our Jeep Wrangler which has been out fitted for rock crawling (hence why we are in Moab a lot). First impressions: this little unit was super easy to install and use right out of the box. My husband loves radios and communication devices and has a CB, Ham Radio, and now GMRS radio all installed in the Jeep. He was able to fit the small, and sleek device easily amongst all his gadgets without taking up too much space. You can hardwire the radio into the vehicle or just plug it into the cigarette lighter (12v power jack). We used the plug in so we can unplug it if we are not going to be using it for a while. One other benefit is it has a USB port which allows you to charge other devices (like your hand held radios) while driving. It has 15 channels—half of which provide a higher power transmit (since it does not have a mic gain) to improve range. It is also feels really durable considering it is a small, compact and sleek unit. We are not easy on our gear and we feel this unit will be able to take a beating.
Usage Impressions: My husband was able to test out this in a variety of situations. He tested range with his friend who was sitting at home (using a non-Midland radio) in Heber City, UT and he was driving. He was able to get about 10 miles in this situation with super clear sound and transmission. We also tested range between two moving vehicles driving on Highway 6 to Moab. The jeep obviously had the base station and I had a handheld X-talker in my car. We were able to get at least 5 miles between vehicles while both were moving and going through the winding canyons/mountain passes. We were also on the higher channels which boosts the transmission signals. One huge bonus was the volume of the speaker. It was loud enough to be heard clearly over the elevated road noise of driving a lifted Jeep at high speeds on the highway. He came through super clear on my handheld and I couldn’t detect much of the surrounding noise.
Overall evaluation: we love this little unit. It just allows us to have another means of communication when we are traveling in the backcountry and cell reception is spotty. The sound quality cannot be beat and has the same quality whether you are using another Midland radio or a different brand. How we foresee using this more in the future, is when we are backcountry car camping or hunting where we need to set up some type of base camp while we go out and explore. It will also be great to use if we are part of a jeep caravan off roading and not everyone has a communication device. We can pass out our handhelds so all vehicles can talk to each other on the trails. If you are looking to get a non-handheld radio that has awesome range, clarity and durability for a great price—the MXT275 MicroMobile base station should be on your short list of options if not the only one.
I would recommend this to a friend!

The radio is well packaged with useful hand held controls. The ability to be able to plug the radio into the vehicle accessory port when needed is a plus. However, midland gets poor marks for not disclosing that the unit only uses narrow band. Both the manual and spec sheet do not disclose this fact. And The spec sheet is really not a spec sheet but more of a consumer brochure for advertisement. Very poor marks for this fact. This radio maybe good for some but failure to disclose the facts leaves me with a sour feeling. And asking me to rate the Battery Life of this product is down right stupid as there is no battery within the unit.

Hello! We are sorry to hear that your experience didn't meet your expectations. Our MXTs are narrow band radios with the exception of the MXT400 (only) which are wide band compatible by default. Repeaters run both wide and narrow band, with wide band being more popular do to its historical use. You should check on the repeaters in your to see if they are wide or narrow band. Some are switching over to narrow band. Despite the bandwidth of the repeater, the narrow band radio is compatible with a wide band repeater. Using a narrow band radio on a wide band repeater might cause some diminished audio

Great radio, BUT... Two major flaws.

Love the form factor, nice and small, easy to install, great ergonomics. Two major issues: 1. There's no setting to have the radio come on when power is applied. Every time you cycle the vehicle key, the radio remains off and you have to turn it on manually - EVERY TIME!!! This gets annoying quick. This is a deal breaker for me; a mobile radio that is designed to be installed in a vehicle should have the option to come on automatically when power is applied. 2. When the radio is on, the LCD remain on at all times - this is good. But for some reason the keypad lighting times out in 10 seconds and there's no way to change it. Why, Midland? Why did you give us seven different color options for the LCD but not an option to have the keypad lighting on at all times? I'm returning the radio. If these two issues are fixed in the future, I will buy the radio again.

The MXT275 is a good entry level GMRS which is compact and delivers good reception. The only downside is that it does not support dual tones. This limits the repeaters you can use.

So close to the perfect radio

The Midland MicroMobile radios are a great lineup and still probably the best choice for most overland/4x4/car-to-car communications. There is room for improvement, and it seems it could be fixed by a firmware update. I'll update more below.
The hardware on this unit is excellent. the radio handpiece feels substantial in the hand and the PTT button feels better than the MXT105 this is replacing. Its great to have a speaker you can hold closer to your ear for better understanding. The buttons are backlit, which makes making adjustments in the dark much easier than the MXT105. The only mark against the hardware that I'd give is that the "amber" backlight color is more red (minor nitpick). While I'm calling out hardware improvements, I'll note in this review that the hood mount that is said to fit a 5th gen 4Runner does NOT fit a 2018 (5th Gen, post face-lift) 4Runner. There was major interference with the cowling. I hope they can update this product, too, as it's nice quality.
Now for firmware updates: The menu system is unintuitive to use. I have to reference the manual in order to make most changes. I believe the sequence is to hit the "menu" button, and that cycles through the menu items, then you press the "Lock" button to indicate that you have reached the menu item you want to change (um, what?), make your adjustment with the arrow buttons, then press lock again to confirm the change (seriously?). If you forget to press the lock button, the change is reverted. Also, the menu system tries to spell out letters of what menu item is ready for you to attempted the magic button incantation to attempt to adjust. Using a 7-segment display to try to spell out initials for setting titles that I rarely adjust is again, very unintuitive. I wish they would follow the Motorola Talkabout menu system (and perhaps the menus on their handhelds are similar) where you press the Menu button to cycle through menu items, but the menu item being manipulated is indicated by the flashing the icon on the display. That method is SO MUCH more intuitive, faster, and with less button presses.
Second, this unit should really turn on when 12V power is applied, like the MXT105.
Third, the backlight intensity should be adjustable.
Midland, feel free to reach out to me about these changes. I would love to help in any way I can. I am local.
