I put this in my Dodge Journey. It is so light weight and was easy to mount on the side of the center console. I really do not get much traffic talking on it. If your looking for people to talk to your not going to get it on here unfortunately. It receives business traffic talking but they do not respond. I love the weather channel on it if I want up to date when out running around. So if your looking for a radio for off roaming and you have a crew that is with you. Then this is the way to go. As far as distance I know a couple of the traffic is a good 5 to 20 miles away. The reception is kind of static. So you may want to upgrade the antenna. If a different mount option, like door jam, window, becomes available then I am going to try it.
This radio is great. I especially like the feature that shows the ctcss code on the screen. This is a way to make sure it is properly programmed. I have a small car.and the size makes it a lot easier to mount.
I had a CB and Ham installed in my Jeep for trail runs, but found I hardly used them because everyone else I wheeled with just used GMRS, so this was a no brainer rather than using a handheld.
Installation was very straight forward. I used hose clamps to afix the base mount under the drivers seat. I had to fabricate a small mount for the magnetic antenna. The hand mic/speaker feeds up alongside the center console, making it easy to use while on the trail.
The included manual answered all the questions I had when it came to settings.
Overall, I'm very happy with this radio, so I bought a couple for my sons too.
Overlanding in the California Big Sur. All three vehicles had Midland Micromobile GMRS units. We were able to communicate over 3 hill ridges approximately 3miles away. The included antenna was plenty for our overlanding use, but I plan to upgrade to an MXTA10 3dB Antenna in the near future.
The handset cradle double sided tape doesn't stick well to the vehicle interior surfaces. Will need to find a way to screw the mount more securely.
Has worked perfectly. The fact that I can hide the unit behind the dash and have all the functions in the handheld piece, makes this an excellent purchase.
