Bought this for my side by side to communicate with my group. Also bought some hand helds for the people who don't have their own radios. Works perfectly. I bought the speaker thinking the handheld mic wouldn't be loud enough in a SxS but it is actually very loud and clear. Probably didn't need the speaker.

Setup as a base station with accompanying antenna sitting in a window. Able to hit a repeater that is approximately 5 miles away, with obstructions. Do plan to install a base antenna on top of my 25' barn roof, expect range to easily hit 20 miles.

Powered up and worked fine the day I received it. But now will not power up. Tried the cigaret style plug, an SPOD and even direct wire to the vehicle battery. Still no go. Shame. I was looking forward to the flexibility this unit proposes to offer. Now I'll have to wait to see if Midland can make this right. Review update when a functioning unit can be fully evaluated.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
