Amazing!
on September 5, 2013

I'm a professional wedding photographer and I use a Canon 5D Mark III - the thing is, I don't want to take the heavy DSLR body or expensive lenses traveling with me. I couldn't wait to get my hands on the NEX camera and see what it could do. I bought the 50mm/1.8 and 16/2.8 lenses which was worth it since I enjoy using prime lenses and shallow depth of field. I took it on my recent trip to Ireland - which means I trusted it THAT MUCH to capture the amazing landscape and to document this once in a lifetime trip that I had. I am thrilled with the images and also the features - the wi-fi allowed me to instantly share to social media (better than any iPhone pic) and also teach my friend who didn't know anything about photography to easily focus on me with the touch screen feature and adjust the dial for shutterspeed (while it was on manual mode) so she could get the correct exposure. I also have a Powershot S100 but it is basically a point-and-shoot, even with an F/2 capability. This NEX is pretty much what I use to take photos for my blog and personal trips like traveling. If I were to suggest a camera to any bloggers, or moms who just want something that works well - this is now what I recommend. DSLR quality too! Can't beat it.

My DSLR is getting lonely.
on September 3, 2013

I've been shooting with Canon and Nikon DSLR's for a LONG time, since 2005 I believe. When mirrorless cameras were announced I was skeptical, how could something so small and light produce images comparable (and often better) than my big bulky DSLR?
After shooting with the NEX-5R for a couple of weeks I can honestly say that my DSLR is collecting dust on a shelf. Why the change of heart? Here are some reasons...
****** What I like ******
- It's small. Real small. I am an active guy, I hike, bike, and ski my brains out. In order for me to take decent (non cameraphone) shots during these outdoor activities I usually had to haul my DSLR with me. That meant I'd be removing my vertical grip, and packing one to two lenses so it didn't feel like I had a boat anchor on my back. With the NEX-5R, this thing fits in the back of my cycling jersey with the stock 18-55mm lens, that's how small this thing is.
- WiFi is awesome. I use this feature constantly with my iPhone, and Xperia tablet. I can transfer the shot in a couple seconds, edit with Snapseed and publish it up to my blog, Instagram feed, or Facebook. It's a killer feature.
- Low light sensitivity! I attached a photo that I took drinking wine with a friend at dusk. Simply put, if you're shooting in low light, you won't have to go to ISO 1,000,000 to make the photos look good.
- The video is REAL, REAL good. 1080p60 with depth of field? Yup.
- Panoramic mode is just awesome. I attached one that I shot at dawn overlooking Snowmass. There aren't any stitch marks, the photos are massive in size, and they look GORGEOUS. You'll find yourself using this feature all the time because it's just that good.
- it shoots to regular old SD cards. Amen, Sony. Thanks for not trapping us into Magic Gate / Stick / whatever that format was. Warning: Make sure you use Class 10 cards.
****** What don't I like? ******
- It doesn't come with a viewfinder. Yes, you can buy one, but I REALLY wish it had it out of the box. I shoot in a lot of high light environments, like snow. I have to crank the brightness on the viewfinder to see what I'm doing. Is this a deal-breaker? Absolutely not.
****** Wrapup ******
+ Takes amazing photos.
+ Low light performance is crazy good.
+ Incredibly portable.
+ Takes regular SD cards.
+ Controls are great.
+ Videos look gorgeous.
+ Panoramic mode is a hidden gem.
+ WiFi and Play Memories is great for transferring pics to your smartphone / tablet.
- Doesn't have a viewfinder. (Although you can purchase one.)

Stunning Video Quality!!
on November 3, 2012

I am usually a dedicated Canon user, as such my main unit was the Canon T3i. Problem is that I need to be able to record 1080p 60p (60fps). Almost all Canon DSLR's are incapable of doing this simple task, as well as Nikon's.
I've found that most Sony DSLR's do... but I also travel to Tokyo often, and needed something a little more portable. I originally planned to get this cam for my fiance'.. but once I tested it out for myself, it was perfect.
The stills are awesome, and the camera is very compatible with my Mac, and editing software such as Aperture, Final Cut, and Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro. Also Lightroom, and iPhoto but not so great with iMovie. Compressor and Motion are great too.
The articulated touch screen is a HUGE plus. With the fact that I can also mount Sony DSLR lens to this unit with optional adapter was a huge selling point for me. The auto focus on this thing is phenomenal!! To say the least.
I've actually uploaded a video of 1080p 60p on YouTube... check it out

What's great about it: Light weight, extremely portable, powerful with amazing video quality. Very very versatile.
What's not so great: Can only use on main accessory at a time which is really anoying. Example: If you use the flash, no room for veiw findr

Just Perfect

This camera is just perfect. I Love it.
I enjoy using it any place I go for the fit size and light weight.
Truely functional. You'll be stunt by how it works in Auto that you will give up manual mode. But on the other hand, Manual is just so easy with all the button and control dial in front of you.
The screen is so truthful and touch idea just makes it more excellent. You can rotate it 180 and I did enjoy self portrait with me and my girlfriend.
And the idea of sharing photo online or to other device is great. Nobody catchs moments and shares it faster than you dooo.
This is so cool. You won't regret it.
What's great about it: Fit Size, Hi Quality, Smart Auto, Easy Manual, Fully Control, Style In Pocket Size,
What's not so great: I Like the touch screen more sensitive like a Xperia.

Nice Experience.

I bought this camera two months ago and I must say that is the ideal camera for those who are going out and want to take some casual pictures. The image quality is simply amazing, I really want to try other lenses, but for now the 18 - 55 is working great! The flip-out screen is very comfortable when you need to take some difficut pictures. The Program Auto works perfect! And the 10 fps is amazing for sports shooting.
What's great about it: Light weight, high quality pics, great low light performance
What's not so great: Touch Screen not necessary, short battery life

Great for beginners
on November 16, 2012

This is my first Nex camera. I was thinking of buying either 5N or 5R. Finally, I bought the new version. It works perfect for beginners like me, since it even comes with tips for shooting. I do not need to know the professional words or meannings for the parameters to get the photo effect I want. I am still trying to explore the full functions.
The only concern is since I do not have a chance to compare 5N and 5R, I am always concernnnig about if the 250 axtra dollars were needed compared to 5N. Also, I hope there can be more and better apps coming for the camera.
What's great about it: Easy to use, good quality
What's not so great: Pricy maybe because it is new

Awesome camera!

This is my first compact system camera after finally upgrading from a point-and-shoot (cybershot). I really like the size of this camera and the quality is really fantastic. I've taken a few photography classes and know my way around a dark room so this was my first venture into digital photography and I think the NEX-5R is a perfect transitional camera for someone looking to upgrade. Check out the photos I took at the Target Holidazzle parade. While I am an employee of Sony, these opinions are my own.
What's great about it: WiFi, compact, image quality

Excellent Camera

Excellent camera.
Great for beginners, easy to use.
The touch screen is unresponsive most of the time, but you don't need to use the touch screen for anything. You can use the control dial for everything.
Price is a little steep.
Overall excellent camera that I would recommend to anyone.
What's great about it: Easy to use, Great quality photos.
What's not so great: Unresponsive touch screen, although you don't need to use it.
I would recommend this to a friend!
