Live the app and the meter. But will not connect unless
The base, thermometer, and phone are within 2 feet of each other.

Great in theory, poor in practice.

In theory, this thermometer is a great idea. The ability to monitor both ambient and internal temperature simultaneously is terrific. The fact it's wireless and integrates with an app on my phone is also great. In practice, however, it's really challenging. I tested the accuracy with a calibrated instant read thermometer, and a laser thermometer and both sensors are very accurate. The problem is with the connectivity. It constantly disconnects from the app, even when the charger and phone are within 5 feet of the thermometer. At 20 feet it won't connect at all. I had hoped that I could use the charger like a wifi extender by having the charger several feet away from the thermometer and then my phone connecting to the charger should give me more range, but that doesn't work. The thermometer also cycles through estimating cook time so frequently that the phone sounds an alarm every 10 minutes or so during a cook, which makes it difficult to understand when a real notification happens. This means I have to monitor my cook personally just as if I was checking periodically with an instant read thermometer or a wired meat thermometer.

Use Traeger Probe instead

Despite having the base not 2 feet from my probe, I consistently loose connection. I had heard of these problems with the original MEATER, which why I opted for the MEATER2 PLUS. This leads to annoying alerts/notifications during a long cook. If you have a Traeger that comes with a probe, use that with the app. It works 1000% better. This product was a disappointment. The app has neat features that I wish Traeger would do in their app.

Lack of compatibility specifications

Last year I purchased an Ironwood XL because I was impressed with the assisted cook features through the Traeger app. I struggled with the wired probes and decided to purchase the Traeger Meater 2 plus probe thinking it would pair with the Traeger app. But it doesn’t. Very disappointing, thinking of sending the probe back. It is too bad that Traeger did not make that information available in their advertising for the Traeger Meater 2 probe.

Meater 2 +, Excellent results

I have a Meater +, and just purchase the Meater 2 +. MUCH improved, in my opinion. Where I would lose connection with the Meater +, I do not with the Meater 2+. It is definitely worth the extra money. Very accurate, very good with maintaining connection. A home run in my book.

Underwhelming

I wish Traeger would have just went with two wired thermometers that tie into their wifi app. This is a poor Bluetooth substitute.

Hello, and thanks for your review of the MEATER 2 Plus. The control panels for most WiFIRE Traegers are not designed to interface with MEATER probes, and it isn’t really possible to update earlier models to make them compatible. However, this functionality has been included for the new Timberlines and Ironwoods, which can both use the wireless Traeger X MEATER probes for providing cook data directly in the Traeger app. These TXM probes come automatically with the new Timberline and Timberline XL (but not the 850 or 1300) and can be added to the new Ironwood and Ironwood XL (but not the 650 and 885). As for the MEATER 2 Plus, there is definitely a lot more to them than just being a Bluetooth version of the average meat probe. Used with the standalone MEATER app, you’ll have access to some of the most advanced cooking features available, including a Cook Estimator for detailed planning of your meal, the MEATER Master Class guide for step-by-step recipe instructions and a comprehensive cook history so you can repeat perfect cooks even if you forgot how they were done. For a more detailed description of everything these probes can do, head over to meater.com and check out all the different features that you already have at your fingertips with the MEATER 2 Plus.
