New 540 is great
on July 16, 2025
Posted by: DaveW
I got my new 540 a few weeks ago and it has been great. It replaced my older 520 plus. Transferring my profiles and information from my 520 plus to new 540 was simple during set-up. I was able to add some new fields to profiles regarding my e-bike. Need to figure out if Garmin can accommodate e-bike booster battery too in battery percentage. Battery life of new Garmin 540 has been fantastic. Definitely recommend.

Feature packed, grade inaccurate, climbpro sux
on July 23, 2025

Easy to setup. Some features took a bit of digging to find and modify. The default screens appear to be set to show all the new features and gadgets. Mostly not for me. Buttons are not as intuitive as the last model. I have had several models of the Edge 500 series. Long battery life. Good display. One I figured out how to change the screens, I was much more satisfied with this Edge. I don't think the grade works very well at all. Jumps around too much, is slow to respond, and isn't that accurate. My last Edge was more stable and seemed to agree with online mapping gps apps. Comparing my Forerunner 965 to this Edge 540 showed discrepancies. Most of the time the Edge was low by 1 to 3 degrees and response was slower. However, there were times when the Forerunner was lower. Go figure. Oh, I really dislike the ClimbPro. Way off as to start and end of climbs. And the pop-up is too big and stays on during a climb, blocking the view of more important data. I had to search how to turn it off and did so. I don't see me ever using it again.

Enjoying the additional features over the 530
on July 24, 2025

Enjoying the additional features over the 530 like climb pros for climbs without having a route/course going. But, I want the ability to turn OFF the e-bike low battery notice on screen. This notice will NOT leave the screen when I press the "x" button and it overrides my ability to see any of my screen... won't allow me to save the activity at the end... won't let me see the route directions when they come up... it is very very obtrusive. I can check my battery levels myself. Please make that an OPTIONAL feature! Also, it is NOT giving me training load status at all.

Clunky Operation w/ Buttons
on July 28, 2025
Posted by: MTBRon
I purchased this as backup for my 840. I am long time Garmin user going back to Edge 710. This unit I has nearly the same features as my 840 but operation using the buttons is not intuitive which would be helpful for backup that will be used sporadically. Wahoo Elment Bolt is much more intuitive and user friendly
