Love this thing

Navigation is much improved and battery life is amazing. Have done 12 and 17 hour rides with navigation and phone connected and still had ample battery life

Been using the garmin for a month. Some places I know and others I don't. It has the capability to reroute you on a premade course if you go off course to find your way back or if your route isn't what you wanted. Amazing feature.

Not as intuitive as the older Edge 510/520, no touch screen

I have been a long time user of Edge cycling computers. Started with the Edge 510 and then moved to 520 when I started using a power meter. My wife has a 510, son now has my older 520, and I'm using the 540.
The majority of my rides are road/gravel, but I also mountain bike maybe once every week or two. My overall impression so far is that there are too many notifications, beeps, segment notices, climb notices, fitness metrics, etc that end up feeling distracting / annoying and I just need to shut them all off. I'm finding that I miss the touch screen of the 520 and that the side button navigation of the 540 is less intuitive. I feel like I need to go back and review the instructions again to make this device a little bit less annoying. It feels like the device is constantly beeping and showing me all these little things it can do and track when I really just want to be left alone while riding and be able to look down and see my cadence, heart rate, speed, distance, and time while riding.
I think it all comes down to how much interaction you want while you are riding. If you're a Strava nut or segment chaser, this might be great for you. The device itself has performed flawlessly so my four star review is just based on the user experience and the many annoying notifications / metrics I need to divert my attention to while riding to dismiss them and just get back to my home screen.

Simple setup and pairing with HR strap and varia. Wouldn't ride without it.

My favorite cycling computer just got better

I had expected the 540 to be a lot more similar to the 530 but the performance and UI have improved, and it charges with USB-C now. Haven't done a really long ride yet but the battery life seems comparable to the older models. Great upgrade for anyone with an older Garmin, and very competitive with the Wahoo and Karoo alternatives.

Perfect size to have all 7 of my data screens displayed visibly while not being too large and in the way. I often use it in tandem with my Forerunner, and the numbers are very very very close to each other in terms of elevation and distance.
The lack of touchscreen didn't bother me, except when I had my lights up against the buttons due to handlebar space. In those instances, touchscreen would have very handy.
Great for any level of cyclist who wants data!

I really like the features and it works well for both road and mtb. I just wish you could do more through the app.
