For a big lens the weight isn’t bad. Better than expected. I’m impressed with my pics.

I Didn't Realize

I'm a very novice camera person. I don't know much about the technical workings of cameras. I have a Canon EOS 6D Mark II and I was very excited to add the 200-800 lens to my collection. Turns out my camera is a mirrored camera and the lens is designed to work with a mirrorless system. I had to return it. Fortunately, I already have a 100-400 that works great and a doubler. Never thought to put those together, but now can't wait to try it out. So, I guess the 1-star rating is really for me rather than the lens. It pays to know your equipment.

Best birding lens I've ever used !

Let me tell you how much Love this lens :)
After using one for more than 2 yrs, and taking thousands of fantastic with it, I'm fixing to buy my second one right now :)
I already have two R7's, and I just have to have a backup. Anything could happen. I could drop my camera. I could get robbed, or heck, it could just fail on me.
Now what if I'm on one of my multi-thousands of miles, multi-week birding trips, and this happens ? My 4 yr warranty or full coverage camera insurance is not going to help with this.
I HAVE to have a backup at all times 🙂👍
And btw, if someone have me a 600 F4, I'd sell it immediately. I don't need speed. I need reach, and versatility. And nothing gives me more of that, than the 200-800 ;)

Amazing lens. I’ve done lots of wildlife photography with it in the past month since I bought it, and haven’t been disappointed in the slightest. Keeps insane clarity all the way zoomed in on my Canon R7 and captures immense detail. I shoot handheld and have no problems. It is an amazing lens especially for the price.

Great Lens. Good to the full 800mm
on January 1, 2026

This lens is awesome!!! I'm a plane photographer and bought it to replace my old Tamron 150-600mm. Unlike the Tamron, which basically was unusable after 500mm, this lens is good up to the full 800mm.
I also bought the 2.0 teleconverter. While I didn't have the opportunity to fully test it (The wind got too strong and I had to leave the location), the little but I got to use with the TC looks very promising.
I only gave it 4 stars for 2 reasons:
1. It's impossible to go from wide open to fully zoomed in one turn. You must turn it part way and reposition your hand to turn the rest. Not very ideal when you're following a bird or other unpredictable wildlife.
2. You can't put a filter on with the hood on. The hood doesn't fit over the filter, and you can't put the filter on after putting the hood on.
Would I buy again? Absolutely.
Do I recommend it? Absolutely.

A very nice long telephoto zoom that has some benefits

It's a very nice long telephoto that drops back to manageable focal lengths for finding and composing. It's supported by the RF 2x teleconverter making the maximum 1600mm focal length as good a personal telescope, though the field of view is understandably much narrower than a telescope. But it's still possible to photograph Saturn with the rings visible. It's not too heavy but not really practical for common hand-held uses. I bought it to use instead of my RF800mm f/11 to get a stop faster and an adjustable aperture. Obviously two stops faster than the RF800mm f/11 when using the 2x teleconverter. On that basis it was worth the cost. I'm basing the review for now on astrophotography only but I intend to use it for long distance scenery as well.

Best telephoto lens for the Canon EOS R7

Quality build, weight is manageable. I shoot handheld it is a little but heavier then a 150-600 but not a huge difference. Lens is extremly sharp and focus is fast. I use for birds in flight and have noticed my pictures in focus has more than doubled from my last telephoto lens. Happy with the reach as well. The F.9 just means i shot early in the morning now and in the evening it comes down to having 10 minutes less than a F.5 lens. The boca background is not an issue at F.9 most of the time it's completely blowned out.
