Excellent Product

I have a nice landscaped fire pit and chiminea in my back yard. The fire pit is great for gathering several people around the fire but the smoke is always a problem forcing us to retreat very early. The chiminea is great but only a couple of people can enjoy it at a time. This product is excellent. Very intense heat and the smoke is no problem. It looks very beautiful too!

Best Fire Pit

First of all, I spent 11 years as an Assistant Scout Master with the BSA as my son and I went through his march to Eagle Scout. As ASM I spent 11 years around a lot of campfires, so I think I know a little about starting them, tending to them and getting smoked by them. My wife and I moved into a new home last year in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains, and were considering building a patio and fire pit on the property. Instead we decided to give the Yukon a try for our existing patio area. We received the unit yesterday. It came very well packed and has one part to put on, that being the top of the fire ring. I spent the day breaking in the unit and I must say, I'm completely amazed by the unit. More importantly, my wife likes it, and we all know what our lives are like when honey is happy.
Starting a fire in this thing is very simple, and like with every good fire it starts with a nice pile of kindling and a fire starter stick. I had done some cleanup on our property and had assembled a large quantity of kindling and progressively larger sticks, up to a couple of logs about 6-7 inches in diameter. The fire starte up very easily and as I added progressively larger sticks, the fire grew. Once I had a fairly full amount of wood in the Yukon, the flames started coming out of the holes around the top of the fire ring...very cool.
Now, I added one thing to my Yukon that I read from another reviewer because of the comments about the unit's tendancy to rust. I ordered a fire blanket from Amazon to use as a cover in the evening because, well, you have to let the fire die out before you can clean it. More on that in a moment.
This evening my wife and I fired up the pit again, it was around 41 degrees this evening here in Georgia. There have been a lot of comments about the amount of heat the unit throws off. Well I can tell you that we were more than satisfied with the heat production. We had to sit about three feet away from the unit just to be comfortable. Now, to be sure, the amount of heat produced is a function of how much wood you burn, and I like to burn a lot of wood, so my fires are generally big. Let me say that at 41 degrees, the unit kept us very toasty. Also, I can assure everyone that the unit gets very hot so good campfire edict must be observed especially if small children are around. Standing directly overtop of the unit while the fire is going is not possible, the heat is intense. So make sure to keep young children away from this unit. This baby gets hot.
Right now I am inside my house and the fire blanket I ordered is currently covering the unit. I used the blanket earlier today and it kept the fire embers hot, so if I wanted to go back out and start it up, I would just take the blanket off and get it going again. The blanket is heavy and waterproof, so if it does rain it will keep the rain out of the unit.
If I have any suggestions for the manufacturers, it would be to develop some type of "grasping" unit to help move the unit; or make the ash pan somehow removable. I think tomorrow when I clean it out I will turn the unit over onto a used bed sheet, or maybe shop vac it out. I'll keep you posted. That's about the only negative I can see so far.
As for clean-up, I also plan to coat the Yukon with a light amount of WD-40 to help reduce any chance of water contributing to rust. Again, I'll report back.
So, in closing, the unit will smoke upon start-up, but once the fire is going, it has much, much less smoke than a traditional fire pit. You will still have a little smoke smell on you, but that is the glory of the outdoors. Very pleased with the unit and look forward to many nights of burning wood!
