I had originally talked myself out of buying this set. Then I went on an Alaska cruise and saw orcas, so this was too fitting to pass up. The set has loads of play features. Because of the large hulls and new orca piece, the set is expensive, overpriced, really. I'm glad I waited for double points and a GWP before buying it. *The ship: This is LEGO's longest floating ship. It has a sleek, colorful, realistic design. The structures and interiors are very nice. The outside deck feels underequipped. I added accessories such as extra diving gear, a deep diving helmet, knives, snow shoes, a saw, and a surveillance drone with a hinged housing. *The helicopter: It's cute and swooshable. Not realistic compared with real choppers on research vessels. I wouldn't want to ride in arctic air in an unenclosed cabin. It holds only one minifigure. No room for a passenger or cargo. I added storage boxes to the sides. *The raft: It's suitable. Holds a driver and a scientist/photographer with two clips for equipment. *The crane: Three of its four functions work well. It's very hard to tip up and down. There was surely a better, smoother design that used a worm gear or an actuator. *The ROV: Simple but effective and realistic. It's a nice inclusion. *The shipwreck: A little bigger like the wrecks in similar sets would've been nice, but this has neat colors and building techniques with cool sunken Viking gear.
This ship is amazing! Excellent interior details, a moon pool, an inflatable raft, a helicopter and even a little ROV for exploring the ocean floor. This is what I call a playset. This set receives an A+ from the Brick Professor.

Got this for my 9 year old daughter for Christmas. She's new at building Lego sets, so she needed a lot of help with a set this complex. But she absolutely loves it and so do I. And it really does float!

I’m an oceanographer and have worked on several ice breaking ships in the Arctic, and this set got it all right! It was really fun to build and I love the addition of the ROV, helicopter and small boat. The Arctic series is my all time favorite, great work LEGO!

Pros: Lego boats are always a mixed bag...you give up a lot of part count for those big hull pieces...and often the boats themselves are kinda meh. This was an exception though. This is a good overall build. The boat is well designed and offers a lot in play features without cutting too deep on the part count. The inclusion of some new animals and a sunken treasure really rounded it out nice. It has decent figures and overall it feels and plays well. My nephew and I easily filled a full afternoon exploring the high seas. Cons: Stickers...I hate stickers in general...but Lego boats should NEVER have stickers. You know the kid is going to take it into the tub, the pool and every puddle in the yard and those stickers last about an hour once they get wet.

This was a two day build for an eight year old who only let me sort bricks. He also had to deal with a younger brother who kept taking finished parts to play with. As with most of our builds, talking while we work together is a big part of the build.

Good effort poor execution

The boat has a major structural flaw in that there are only a single connection amidships around the well deck and that any serious play results in collapse as the stem and stern separate. Otherwise the build is fun and detailed and the amount of extras is great - helo, zodiac, scuba divers, underwater camera
Having worked on an ice-capable R/V myself, this one was a no-brainer. And it is a big boy! And very playable! Will try it out in my hot tub, and report back. Piece count was low, but you do get an orca, transportation, and a really cool little shipwreck. The mini figures are detailed, but if you collect the artic sets, you will have seen them all before. So your mileage may very on this set as to why you want it. Oh! And stickers :/
