Enjoyable experience. Great display

For me, this set could’ve easily been a five but there were 2 exceptions.
I’ll start off by saying I own the last UCS X-wing and I really enjoyed the improvements and the change in design. It looks amazing as a display piece. The build was a bit tricky on a few steps but overall it was not that challenging. I have definitely built much more difficult sets. I LOVE THE NEWLY PRINTED UCS PLAQUE! Wish they started doing this years ago. Great addition.
Where this set falls short of the 5 rating is the R2-D2 size and the cockpit windshield being loose/unprotected in the box.
The R2 minifig doesn’t look terrible in his droid compartment but it would’ve looked significantly better if there was a larger fig or a printed dome used as his head to represent a more accurate sized droid.
The cockpit windshield…. This has been an issue for me with several sets over the years. It’s loose in box and leaves a lot of room for damage scuffing. Unfortunately I ordered my set online so it had to travel a long ways. I believe this caused some of the damage. There are several scuffs/scratches all over the clear parts of the piece as well as one rather unsightly scratch to the printing.
Overall, I loved this set and do not regret my purchase at all. I mainly just wish my windshield wasn’t damaged.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Very Disapointed

Lets start with the negatives. This X-wing can only be displayed with the wings open. When closed, they don't even come close to touching and droop down so low, it looks absolutely terrible. The scratched up canopy piece that was loose in the box, (they get points for not putting it in a bag with other pieces and lose points for not putting it in it's own bag to protect it) doesn't fully close and the control panel is pressed right up on it.
The mini-fig R2-D2 looks stupid since it is clearly out of scale with the rest of the model.
The side panels pop off when you try to attach other side panels until you manage to not touch the opposite side at all when pushing them into place. This probably took me 5 tires before I finally got them all on without knocking other ones off.
Lazily designed and doesn't present itself as a premium product.
Pros: The display plaque is printed.
More cons: There are still stickers in a UCS set intended for display, but at least there were only a few and they were decently easy not to completely mess up.
I've been wanting an x-wing for a while now since I never had the previous UCS model, but now I'm just disappointed.
I generally don't leave reviews, but I'm so annoyed after putting this thing together, here we are.

Good for size and experience

Very good but many components like the stand are out dated and flimsy. The panels are very high in detail but fall off easily. Biggest problem is how the tip of the xwing is white instead of gray(Its litteraly gray in the preview photos in the booklet), and also how they edited the mold mark off the plaque.

Incredibly disappointed

The design leaves the model extremely fragile and flimsy. The fuselage side covers constantly fall off do to and any vibration and then gravity takes over. Worst set I've ever built. Extremely poor value for the money.

Easily falls apart

Verified Purchase:Yes
I purchased this x-wing after reading the reviews about the side panels falling off. I should have heeded the warnings. The side panels around the wing mounts do not stay on due to a poor design. Any time i move it it just falls apart in my hand. I purchased an aftermarket stand that I can't even use because the x-wing falls apart while I try to mount it. I have been building lego for decades and this is by far the most fragile set i ever owned.

Luke, use the super glue...

I know the nice Lego lady that responds to these is not going to like this, but having been building the lower end Lego's for my kids for years, and the expensive Technic and Star Wars ones for me, this is far from the first UCS kit I've done. Overall, it's a great kit. Great design, fun and quick to build, not too repetitive, and the final product is really very nice to behold. And quite solid.
But there's a caveat. When building, I noticed that the engineering for the side panels was severely lacking. I could see from experience that this was going to be a "fall apart and put it together again" nightmare. So I bypassed the frustration and used some Locktite superglue, just on the connect pieces on the unit itself, and on the side panels. Once securely fashioned, the side panels easily snapped on, and held on, without any issue, making the build quite the fun one. I can see that people complained about this, and I understand why the Lego engineers did what they did. In order to accomplish the nice lines of the model, I can see that they had little choice in using the attachment method that they did. It doesn't work, but a little dab here and there, and it's great. Really, a beautiful kit. I know it's anathema to see the word "glue" on a Lego anything, but in this case, I found it necessary. To add insult to injury, I also did the same with the large UCS AT AT, whose bottom members sometimes did not agree to hold on tight.
It's a good kit, and when finished, it really looks nice. A nice complement to my Star Wars collection, which, to my wife's dismay, goes back to the very early and very large versions of the Super Star Destroyer and Imperial Star Destroyer, and most every large set from there forwards. Hopefully, I'll get to keep all my Lego's in the divorce.
Buy it. This one is worth it.

For careful consideration

First, I'd like to say this is a great display model of the Red 5 X Wing. A lot of nice details like the hexagonal shaping of the hull and printed windscreen. Some design choices have yielded unfortunate structural compromises that limit the durability of the overall model. That said, anytime so many Lego pieces are used to create something, multiple points of failure are introduced as a result. Your inner kid might want to swoosh it around, but you’ll probably only do so for a moment or two. Given the size of the ship, it’s quite awkward to handle. In hand, it does feel a bit fragile, but not extremely so (as some would have you think). It would be nice if Lego introduced an X-Wing (among many other ships) aimed at adult collectors that relied on less pieces while achieving a high degree of accuracy and detail. There’s simply too much of a gap between play-scale and UCS sets, in terms of both size and price. As a fan of both Lego and Star Wars, I’m glad I bought the ship.

putting the wings on the mechanism for holding the wings just fell apart on it’s own and can’t be fixed without taking most of the ship apart. do not recommend
