Not able to replace a 17" mobile workstation
on July 16, 2022

I was looking for a possible replacement of my P72 ThinkPad. But just looking at the specs it is clear that the P16 will not be able to replace it adequately.
Obviously the screen of the P16 is too small. Even the overall width of the P16 is smaller than the 17" screen of my P72.
But also there's a problem that can be easily overseen: the P16 has no Ethernet connection anymore!
So instead of having a powerful desktop replacement with no clutter around that keeps my desk clean I need to buy and use an additional clumsy USB network interface. It will also block one of the few USB ports, where a 16" device would have allowed to place quite a few more of them.
And, still an issue, is the fact that the P16 can use only the Quadro type of graphics adapters (nVidia RTX) and not the GeForce, which would be cheaper and probably work even better at my use cases.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Downgrade from 17" Workstation

I have a P70 that needs to be replace. What do I find, the 17" laptops have been discontinued in favor of the P16. I'd have to give up about 1.5" of screen real estate on the side and have few ports and fewer storage slots. Can't even order a P16 with ECC memory yet. I ended up ordering a P17 Gen2 to replace my P70. Lenovo, bring back the P17 Gen3 with a 16:10 display. Heck, with the bezels being so big on the P17's, you could fit in a 18" 16:9 display which would be even better. People who are buying Workstation class machines want power and we don't mind the extra of couple of pounds of weight to get it. Oh, and we don't want fancy colors, just give us our business black. Also give us back our 7 row keyboard with deep key travel. Don't forget to give us our LED indicators for the storage indicator, Wireless, etc.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The specs read like it was bigger form factor than the P53 so I was a little worried it wouldn't fit in my backpack where the P53 was quite tight, but it might actually be slightly smaller. The bezel around the screen is just a lot smaller.
Remember the USB-C/Thunderbolt to RJ45 adapter if you don't plan on using a dock, which I highly recommend. Then you only ever have to plug in a single cable. leave all your peripherals connected to the dock. Totally worth the investment.
This is a mobile workstation for sure. It's probably the heaviest laptop I've ever had. But it's a power house. I did get a lot of the upgraded components installed, so I'm sure I'm above the typical weight.
I do wonder how many people actually use the red TrackPoint center button. Does Lenovo just put it in there for nostalgia. I've never known anyone to use it.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Incredible performance, Top CPU, Mega Memory, Greatest graphics....the OLED screen is easier on my eyes than previous models. The only things that could make this machine better are more available ports, and GEN5 NVMe. Windows 11 was installed clean after upgrading the disk drives
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I did the PassMark Performance Test and the overall score was in the 98th percentile. It is fast, powerful, and the screen is fantastic.
