TurboTax Business VA State Return Form 502A Error
on April 16, 2023
Posted by: EPollin
from Virginia
Schedule 502A is used to show the amount of allocated income and to determine the apportionment percentage. If the pass-through entity's income is all from Virginia, then the entity does not allocate and apportion income; the Virginia apportionment percentage is 100%, and Schedule 502A is not required.
When not apportioning/allocating income, in the apportionment section of the Interview the form will generate an error if no selection is made in Section A for the Form 502A. Recommend solution for TY2021 and TY2022 has been to delete the Form. See steps below:
"In the upper right corner of your display is a toggle between Forms and Step by Step Mode. Go into Forms mode and select the 502A form from the list on the left side of the screen. You can delete the 502A forms at the bottom of the screen. Then toggle back to Step by Step and recomplete the Virginia interview to generate the 502 form."
The additional issue is that every time you run through Virginia step-by-step, TurboTax re-generates the Form 502A. Creating a loop, generating the error and forcing user to delete the form again. User ends up needing to delete the form and NOT return to Interview mode. Once in error checking/review, then delete Form 502A and do NOT return to Interview mode to get error check passed.

Not as easy as regular web-based TurboTax

Used TurboTax Business for estate return for my mother's small estate. Much less help available in the business app than the web-based app I use for my personal taxes. I felt like I was flying blind and had to google many questions that should have been handled by the app. Maybe for an actual business that uses Quickbooks, TurboTax business would have been easy, but for a decedent's estate, it was very bare bones and confusing. It still worked and I managed to file the taxes anyway ... after some frustration.
Pros: My employment status changed this year, I bought or sold investments

Doing the actual return was fairly easy. I had to do this for my mom's estate, which by nature is going to be difficult due to the pain of loss. I thought having to us Turbo Tax business was kind of overkill. I mean, it is expensive at $190. Then I had to pay another $55 for the state return only to find out that I didn't need to do a state return due to the small size (monetarily) of the estate. So that made me feel a little ripped off. Like they could tell you that up front. Then I got to a point where it is asking for Special Name Control for the estate. I couldn't find a definition or reference to that anywhere. It was not on the letter from the IRS with the EIN for the estate. So I just used the initials of the name. I couldn't tell why it was telling me to do a form for the carry back or carry forward amount of the loss either. So I submitted without that. I planned to e-file, but there is a form that needs an ink signature and then has to be scanned for including with the online submittal. I am at my dad's, and I couldn't get his printer to work. So I went to a Staples to print and scan. More running around than I expected. But it is done now. I expect it to go easier next year.

It says that we cannot E FILE and it never guided me on how to submit it manually. This is a LLC partnership in Oregon.
Pros: I had a baby

I appreciate the committment to a quality product that the team at Intuit have demonstrated for many years. I have been a customer for longer than I can remember, starting with the Macintax product.
