Get the 916 if you already use Zigbee or Zwave hub

Buy this model if you want to connect to an existing home automation controller with Zigbee. Get the Halo WiFi model if you just want to use an app on your phone and Alexa.
I see some reviews that say you can't control the 916 lock with Alexa. This is simply not correct. But you do need a Zigbee hub. A few of the Amazon Echo/Alexa speakers come with one, but most do not.
There are two big advantages to the 916 over the Halo:
1. Zigbee takes less power than WiFi, so the 916 will require fewer battery changes.
2. The 916 does not require its own app. Having a different app for every smart device brand you own is a pain.
I have my 916 controlled by Home Assistant, and Alexa can control the lock and report on its status. You should be able to do the same with Samsung Smart Things or Hubitat hubs.

Keypad stopped working after 2 years

This deadbolt came with a newly built house we bought and the keypad no longer functions after two years. Several of my neighbors said the same about theirs. Don't waste your money on this. Kwikset should offer a better warranty on such a product but it's only one year.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Next, perform the manual door handing process to recalibrate the latch. Also please ensure the cable connecting the touchscreen and interior assembly are connected.

I live in Florida and brought the 916 model 3 years ago a year because I like the style and sleek look. It connects easily to my home security system where I can unlock/lock the door from anywhere using my smartphone. The downside is that the exterior glass touch pad weathers/cracks over a short period of time. The touch pad is only under a one year warranty so kwikset won't replace this part. You have to purchase an entirely new lock system within a 3 year span. Their manufacturer needs to come up with better material for their touch screen pad that can withstand the elements of the weather. Very poor quality and costly to purchase a new lock.

Ok but consumes batteries too fast.

Consumes batteries every 4-6 months. Can’t use rechargeable batteries. Once batteries are a bit weaker, it will randomly lose connectivity to SmartThings until batteries are replaced. I’ve had this for about 5 years and documented battery usage.

1. Open the door and place the latch in the locked position. Loosen both the mounting screws and the cover screws a quarter turn each.
2. Replace the batteries in the battery holder and complete the manual door handing process to recalibrate the latch: https://youtu.be/jhE5Nilog54

Great company that honor their warranty

I bought my lock just over 2 years ago and the screen cracked quite a bit (weather I guess) emailed the company & they processed and sent me a new one in no time. Will stick with kwikset for all my future locks

Poor ZWave Behavior

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Eazy installation and re-key process. Unfortunately this lock fails to report when it has reached locked status. My hub will send the lock message, but never receives the lock complete response.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Thank you for sharing your experience. We're here to help and to resolve this, please ensure that the lock is not jamming. Measure the door frame jamb hole to ensure that it's at least 1 inch deep and clear of debris. Check that your door is aligned properly, and perform the manual door handing step below.
1. Open the door and extend the latch to the locked position. 2,. Remove the battery pack. 3. Press and HOLD the Program button while reinserting the battery pack. Release button once the battery pack is installed. The status LED will flash red and green. 4. Press the Program button once more. 5. The latch bolt will retract about halfway in and then extend to learn the orientation of the door.

Love the 916

I have installed over a dozen of these locks at multiple locations and I am completely satisfied with all of them. People need to understand the 916 is design to work with a smart hub. I have connected them to my smart security systems. Expect to change batteries every 90 days to 6 months depending on usage.

Great Idea, worst design

Touchscreen not designed for typical East Coast Weather; it cracked within 2 years from the cold winters and hot summers, I suggest getting Level locks.
