I've used this in places with zero cell service. It doesn't take long to turn on and send a message, maybe 5 minutes at most. You can send messages through device itself, but using the app makes it a lot easier. It's easy to use, if you don't like reading directions.

Been using the inreach for 6 months now. It helps the Mrs. feel more comfortable while I am in the backcountry. I like that I can send prebuilt messages along the way at no extra cost to let her know how the trip is going.

Planning on using it hunting and for 14ers so far have not tested it to much but I love the size and in app features seems easy to call sos and send messages throw your phone wish it was a tad bit smaller personal but I've been running/ backing for a while and I'm a ultra light guy so for most people this would be great size just buy one I wanted to long sos is a important thing if your in the back country a lot

It is designed very well and works great but you do need to be fully aware of how to use it to make it as simple or complex as you like to use it.

After setting up the account I was able to text seamlessly with others using inReach to coordinate and update while deep in the wilderness far from cell service. Using the phone I already have with me is a big bonus with this unit.

This is a great compact option for basic text only communication. Starting with the limitations: 1. It is very susceptible to overhead interference (trees, roofs, power lines, etc)
2. There is an additional annual fee on top of the subscription
3. Due to the limitations of the iridium system and with the possibility of high structures or trees around it could take up of 30min to send or receive a message.
What's great: 1. the interface is very intuitive.
2. The system is perfect for what it's designed for.
3. Compared to other systems, this one is far superior.
4. The battery life is great. I used it in the mountains of Idaho, I had full text conversations everyday with my fiance. I never turned it off, and it held a charge for about 12 days. That's 12 days of heavy usage, temperatures in the 30s and never being turned off. You could easily get 15-20days of battery by turning it off at night.
I prefer this system over the inreach mini 2. The comparison I would have to make is, the inreach min 2 is a gps unit that can text. Whereas the inreach messenger is a communication device that can also get you back to where you started. it's a great option for messaging and its limitations are no different than any other satellite messaging platform.
