I didn't expect to like it this much...

I've been a fan of the Edge 830 since its release and when the 1040 Solar was announced I was excited to see what features would trickle down to the 800 series. Instead, I wound up getting more in to following routes, training, and doing big dumb rides on my road and gravel bikes and decided to jump for a larger screen. This screen is unreal. The touch responsiveness is beyond any bike computer I've used, and I rarely charge the thing. The routing is top notch and if you make a route in Connect and create an event for the route, it automatically pops up on the computer.

Better than expected

I knew this is their flagship model, packed with all the features, but I was still a little blown away with how much it really does. I've been a long time Garmin user and am impressed with the UI updates and features of the 1040 over previous models. Yes, you're practically riding with a big screen TV but the ability to see key stats at a glance outweighs the... weight. Living in an area with a lot of exposure, the solar charging seemed a good idea and after a 5 hour ride the battery was still at 93%. The climb pro automatically kicked on for a hill on route which was a nice surprise and the stamina feature is one I'll keep an eye on over time. Overall, I'm pretty impressed with this device.

The design elements and form factor have been elevated to a new place. The Charging port is much improved. The solar charging helps extend run time. The design is well thought out. The mounting system is much improved with a machined metal base, which eliminates the occasional problem that happened previously when a piece might break. Set up is much better, with a choice to migrate all prior device settings, if you like. Overall very well done. I am impressed.

It's big!

This Garmin 1040 was an upgrade from my older 830. I knew this new 1040 was big but it's bigger than I expected. Too big to use on my mountain bike. I have used it about 5 times on my road bike and it works great. I just can't get over the size. It won't fit on my current K-Edge out front mounts on my other road and gravel bikes. The 1040 did come with a longer mount that I'm using until I order some new, bigger K-edge mounts that will work for the larger 1040. The GPS and training sections on the 1040 are a great upgrade from the 830. The map is beautiful and following a route was very easy. The 1040 set up like a new cell phone through Garmin Edge- I mean all my sensors, data fields, everything just transferred wirelessly to the 1040. Simple setup. Automatic uploads to Starva after my ride are fast. Only reason I'm not recommending this to everyone is that it's too big for a MTB and the shear size is almost too much for a road and gravel bike. I'm looking forward to using this on multi day gravel rides where I need a Garmin to last a few days with minimal charging as I navigate in unfamiliar areas.

Have the 1030 plus and love it and think the solar option and added features would be great ! Like the map on it that shows your speed in different colors. The weekly mileage totals are great.

Great GPS

I'm in my 50's and my eyes aren't what they used to be. Reading this screen is significantly easier than on my 530. They also improved the ANT+ connection to lights. The 530 kept dropping the connection to my Bontrager Ion RT lights. This one has been rock solid. Haven't used the nav much because I'm riding locally, but I'm sure it will be handy later on. Battery life is great.

Great purchase even for casual rider

The was my first cycling GPS so the experience has been eye-opening! I use this both for indoor riding as well as road riding. I have yet to use it for MTBing but I'm looking forward to doing that.
The solar power alone was the main reason why I purchased it anyways. While it doesn't charge it as quickly as connecting it to an outlet/computer, that little bit of charge makes massive difference in its battery life. It's given me a lot of peace of mind when going on long rides!
Solar power aside, even though I don't ride as much as I'd like to, I didn't feel like I bought a GPS that has too many featurers I won't use. I've dabbled in the training plan for my indoor rides since I don't have a power meter, but I do have a smart trainer. I've also used its live-tracking feature for when I ended up caught in the dark and had to hitch a ride! I was also able to find out through its navigation features that there was a book shop within a rideable distance from me. Yes, I could have figured that out via Google but having a fun destination to go to made my fitness ride so much more enjoyable!
