Garmin outdoes themselves yet again

I don't usually rave about cycling products, but Garmin really has got this market sector nailed w/ their bike computers.
I love everything about their Edge computers - especially the battery life and massive screen. I can fit darn near every metric I care about on one screen, so I'm not swiping around to get the data I want.
If you're looking for a large screen with amazing battery life, this bike computer is for you.

The perfect bike computer

Sometimes I do very long rides and have held off using a dedicated GPS due to battery limitations. This model solves that as I can probably ride a 1200km brevet in clear conditions without needing a charge. Forget to charge between normal rides? No problem. One annoyance is that I don't necessarily have all the right data on one screen, like heart rate on the climb screen, but haven't played around with settings enough to see what customizations are possible. Highly recommend. For future versions I'd like to see somewhat more intuitive screen workflow as I have to think through how to find preloaded courses and to generally navigate the content. It's no iPhone, and I'm sure I'll get used to the UI.

Incredible battery life!

This has been an absolute game changer for my ultra endurance bikepacking races or multiple days on the bike away from steady charging. At first I thought maybe the solar feature was a gimmick, not at all it allowed me to run my computer for 6days straight without the need to charge it. My one recommendation to any would be buyer is to figure out what features you need and what ones you don't that way you could possibly save some coin by buying the 840 or 540.

This has been great for exploring new routes. Love/hate knowing what my climbs are all about. Solar screen really extends battery between charges.

Battle tested on a 6 day/5 night mountain bike packing trip

I recently switched to the 1040 solar in preparation for a long bike packing trip called Aquarius Trail. It's a rugged 6 day / 5 night mountain bike adventure where you are exposed to just about everything a trip like this can throw at you.
I love the bigger touch screen which came in handy as I needed different ride data like current climb metric, upcoming climbs so I could plan my effort and not burn through too many matches before the end of each stage.
The solar was especially important to keep the unit charged and running. I charged the unit only once, not because it needed it but because I'm used to having to charge a G 530 ever few days after long rides that last several hours. This thing just kept on running!
The only thing that was a bit irritating was how the touch screen gets manipulated by the rain. We were rained on for two days. On day one of the rainy rides, my settings got all screwed up because I failed to lock the screen before the ride. I learned from my mistakes and had a much better experience on the second rainy day.
This unit has all the goods. I use it for my long century road rides with a different ride profile because road biking had it's own kind of data to keep an eye on.
Totally recommend this device if you are needing a new one or looking to upgrade.

I received this on a Wed and got it set up with GarminConnect, and participated in a 24 Hour Charity ride starting at 7pm Friday night. Even with partly cloudy skies, the unit still had 20% charge remaining at close of event on Saturday night. Well worth the cost, especially paired with the Varia 715 for radar alerts. Very intuitive and user friendly.

Garmin Edge 1040 Solar
on July 15, 2024

I have been a garmin user for years. I recently upgraded my cycling computer to the Garmin edge 1040 Solar. My experience so far has been very solid. It was easy to set up and even transferred my existing profiles and sensors.
Connect IQ has tons of options to allow you to customize your display almost any way you could imagine. The Navigation seems to be more responsive and handles missing your turn much better than my older 820. The touch screen is also much more responsive.
While i probably do not need to solar functionality as my typical rides are abut 2-3 hours and only do longer rides a few times a year, I got it on sale and couldn't resist. I do notice the power drain being significantly lower on bright days and have no doubt i could ride all day (and probably the next) without an issue.
As for the cfunctionality tyhe biggest reason i upgraded was to enhance my power based functionality. The Power guides are helpful when you are riding a course you have not previously done, or if you have a hard time of pacing yourself while still getting a good workout in.
The only thing i have not been thrilled with is that the 1040 does not have a tirewiz data field. the #20 and #30 both have the data field to show your tire pressure information but at this time it does not appear to be available for the 1040.
