Top end cycling computer

I like to have the newest gadget, so upgraded to an Edge 1040 Solar from my Edge 1030+. The Solar has a few extra features which are nice, especially as it is also supposed to have better GPS system than the 1030, so should track better for mountain biking. The solar charging is nice, but it doesn't work as well when it's really hot (while on the bike since you're moving, works ok, but if you just leave it sitting out in the hot sun, it gets hot and stops charging. Everything else continues to work just fine, but it gives a message saying solar charging will restart when the device cools). And as long as the battery life is, I'm not sure I really needed the solar charging. Unless you are doing ridiculously long rides, or multi-days without ability for opportunity to charge, the regular 1040 will be sufficient for most.

Not so great...

I upgraded from my Garmin Edge 130 plus or at least I thought I had. The Edge 1040 Solar has many amazing features to dial in your training and track every aspect of your ride but the simplest feature like connecting a sensor is a nightmare. Very frustrating to be getting ready to do a big ride and it disconnects from your heart rate monitor, cadence, and phone. I'm hoping there is perhaps an update in the future that will make this a seamless and reliable task. I give it 2 stars because I do like the solar aspect, the bigger screen, touch screen, and easy-to-read display, but if the connectivity does not improve I will be returning it and going back to my simple Edge 130 plus.

Awesome upgrade

I have this unit for a few weeks now and love it. I upgraded from the 1030 and it was worth it in my opinion. Solar addition is awesome I never plugged it in yet and it has been working for almost 1400 miles. Awesome unit !

Great big screen!

It’s fast, accurate and way easy to see. Doesn’t matter how much sweat is in your eyes! Screen switching is fast and smooth and it connects to sensors super fast. My Edge 830 seems so tiny and old.

I've had a lot of Garmin devices overthe years. I'm truly amazed at how they manage to innovate and move every product passed all competitors. no matter what I've gotten its always ahead of the pack. the 1040 solar is no exception. I've had it almost a month and only charged it once(still at 87%). the new design and is much sleeker. I have a wahoo, hammerhead and a 1030p, this is my go to for every ride know.

Just upgraded from 1030+. Some of the new features are nice but the new font being used makes the screen much easier to view. It's very fast and overall it was a nice upgrade. Solar is fine but don't really gain much from it. Maybe on a real long ride it will help but when out for a couple of hours, I gain a few minutes. I haven't tested all of the new features. Overall though, I am pleased with the purchase.

Excelente en todos los sentidos. Pierde un poco de conectivad por breves segundos, me ha pasado solo en dos ocaciones, sobre todo en giras largas. Pantalla super mejorada, a las 12:00 pm con el sol encima no resplandece, y la velocidad del touch impresionante, la modalidad multabanda del GPS da una precisión increíble en la altitud acumulada no tienes que corregir desde STRAVA...
