Big step up

I bought this because of an altimeter problem with 1030 plus. Problem solved and so many new features. I love it.

A solid if subtle upgrade from the 1030+
on August 12, 2024

I upgraded from a line of Garmins, the last a 1030+. It is indeed a nice upgrade even if it is subtle. It is meaningfully faster to respond. The 1030 was always a bit laggy sliding pages for example and the 1040 just goes. More importantly, it gets the updated UX with bigger type faces in the boxes and just a more modern layout. Congratulations to Garmin for finally rolling new features back at least one generation. The new 1050 features that roll back (beta still but there) were the deciding factor for me. Almost all the new stuff (that I cared about) at a more reasonable price. Nice work. Small, silly thing. All Edge units have felt 'quality' but this one is a step up. Maybe it's just the metal mount but it feels nicer.
I do have one serious complaint. I was really looking forward to the ability to migrate my profiles (I have 8) and sensors over to the new unit. It did NOT work right. Every time the 1040 would crash when I moved profiles. I finally did figure out how to fully clean out the failed attempts (had to manually delete files, reset does NOT do it) and choose only the sensors and then manually rebuild the profiles. Not the end of the world, but a cruel joke that metadata migration can crash a device in such an ugly way. At least sensors moved which saves a lot of faffing
BTW, explain why a simple review form submit fails because of 'ad blockers'? Bad code

Great Features

I bought is a few weeks ago as an upgrade from the Garmin Edge 520 Plus. I love the touch screen and easy swipe between the various screens. The long battery life is also a great plus for me.

Great unit, only one issue I don't like

My one and only issue with the unit is how they chose to define the Timer layout. I used to use a two block screen view to do the time show it would show hh:mm:ss view. Now it uses super script to display hours, and subseconds. Which is great for a single block layout. But doesn't expand to in a two block screen layout. Oh, and the hundredth seconds superscript is useless as it goes away as you pat one full second.

Pluses and Minuses Compared to 1030
on August 14, 2024

The user interface takes some getting used to after several years with the 1030. The variable sized fonts in the data fields drove me crazy, but I have pretty much gotten use to it. The display on the 1030 was better with rounding, in most cases, to three significant numbers. The navigation, particularly when on goes off route and then returns to the route is much better. Both the 1030 and the 1040 fail to appropriately recalculate when off route--long after it is obvious that the rider is on a route that is much shorter. The changes to the 1040 are definitely not worth upgrading from the 1030. I only did it because the case of my old 1030 started to come apart.

Solid Bike Computer Great Features
on August 24, 2024

Garmin Edge 1040 is a really cool device. Nicely integrated with many other platforms, and so many training features. I am also using the Hammerhead Karoo2 and using the 1040 is a learning curve. Many of the options are layered down below several screens and menus. My biggest wish is to increase the size of the positional direction marker, or change the routing line color to a yellow or pink. The purple route line blends too easily with the surrounding streets. The position marker is very small and when you are riding at speed and look down to see your position it is not clear where you are=, especially if you are sweating and have sunglasses, and you need to look quick and look forward again. For me this is not safe and might be why I do not keep the unit. Still on the fence.

Glad to be back with Garmin

Overall I’m very pleased, particularly with the size. The online manual is sorely lacking though. As a retired technical editor and illustrator, the manual could use a lot of help. Too much is assumed.

Next step up for me with Garmin
on August 27, 2024

I had a 1030 for many years and it needed replacing so the 1040 was a logical step. I looked at the Solar and decided the battery life (35 hours) with the conventional unit was enough. It starts up really fast and all of my previous Garmin connect settings transferred automatically. Garmin support is superb.
