I bought the Garmin Edge 1040 model a little over a month ago. Setup is simple and the graphics, navigation and too many features to mention are ideal for monitoring your cycling activities. Screen size is great and easy to see monitor. I highly recommend this cycling computer.

I moved from an Edge 530 to get a larger screen and the touch screen is a game changer! I would struggle to switch through the screens while riding

Incredible device

I bought the 1040 with the bundle. I've used the heart monitor a few times although I don't know what the statistics mean. Despite the cost, I'm glad I bought the 1040 rather than the lower-priced 1030. My only complaint is that I went crazy trying to figure out how to add a customized field to the screen. I did this somewat easily on my Edge 1000, but it took me hours and 80 pages of fields on IQ connect before I found somebody with Appbuilder 5 that allowed me to add a customized field: VFM (Vertical Feet per Mile) = TotalAscent / Distance. I thought I might need an engineering degree to do this.

Love It! Numbers Matter

I don’t leave home (on bike rides) without it. Pairs seamlessly with all my other sensors and I can easily change screens with the swipe of a finger. The overall size of the 1040 being bigger than my old 520 & 530 make it quick to glimpse a field reading on the display. My wife loves the Live Track notification on her iPhone when I set out on a pre-dawn ride. I use Garmin Connected and have found the metrics useful, especially my Power Training Zones and Pedaling Dynamics (Ralley Pedals have proven useful for rehabbing a back injury and regaining RT/LT balance.

GPS tracking is accurate, but missing a feature
on January 23, 2024

I've been using the Edge830 and 530 for three years. These previous-generation cycling computers have had multiple issues with GPS accuracy. Living in Northern Virginia, I've noticed they don't accurately track the "grade" during rainy conditions. For instance, they showed a -2% grade on an 11% incline, resulting in the total achieved elevation being recorded as half of what it should be. Additionally, they often register unexpected drops or increases in speed on our bike road (W&OD). This has led me to use a speed meter, but the speed meter's ANT signal gets interfered with by high-voltage lines, showing speeds 30-40% slower on W&OD.
With the Edge 1040, these two problems have been resolved. It accurately tracks both grade and speed. However, the Edge 1040 lacks an important feature I frequently used: tracking activity profile-dependent distance in the history. With the Edge 830 & 530, I could use this function to monitor the distances of multiple rear tires on various rear wheels. I set an activity profile for each rear wheel and usually change the tire after about 2,000 miles. Unfortunately, the Edge 1040 has eliminated this feature, so now I can't track riding distances for each tire.
As a result, I still carry the Edge 830 to track the distance for each tire. However, I often forget to bring the second cycle computer. I'm now considering writing down the distances on paper and hanging the list in my garage.
So, for me, the Edge 1040 has been quite a disappointment.

Great when it works, but that is not often

The Edge 1040 has a lot of good features, but the basic dependability is lacking. For instance, the heart rate monitor that comes with the bundle worked great for a bit, then stopped. I've tried everything mentioned in all the manuals and forums in an attempt to reconnect the heart rate sensor, with no luck. Quirks like this seem to happen often. When it works, it's awesome...but it's dependability is lacking.

My husband got me the Edge 1040 for Christmas because I had really been wanting a bike computer. After comparing many Garmin and Wahoo bike computers, we chose the Edge 1040, which was far superior. I'm loving it!
