HP Victus 15L: Almost Perfect, But a Fatal Flaw for Power Users

The system was more powerful than I anticipated. I didn’t realize the Intel Arc A380 was so amazing at AV1 encoding; it was also super cool, with hardly any heat, and it ran extremely well. For streaming and light gaming, this machine absolutely flies. It sips power, so you won't pay much to run it all day, and it excels in thermal management. The RAM was stellar (CL22 Crucial), and the A380 held its own. However, the CPU was the deal-breaker. When I started developing, Docker containers were choking, web engines were slowing down, and even Web UI was giving me issues. I discovered that HP has the CPU locked down with an outdated microcode—a firmware-level lock that prevents the CPU from running at its full potential. They won't allow it to be updated. This is a huge shame. Had they allowed the CPU to be updated, I could have kept the machine and pushed its performance to meet my development needs. I had to return it. If you're a streamer or a light gamer, you will love this PC. But if you need to push the CPU for demanding tasks like software development, the outdated microcode will hold you back. A powerful little machine handicapped by a poor design choice.
I've had this PC for about a month now, it's my 1st gaming PC, and it has been excellent so far!
Pros: - For everyday use: It's fast, smooth and quiet, you can't hear any fan noise just doing day to day tasks. Windows 11 is also a great OS. - For gaming: It's a powerhouse. I'm able to play any game on ultra at 1080p (I don't have a better monitor though, so I can't attest to how it would perform with 1440p or 4k). I'm also able to get ray tracing too, which is awesome. - The pre-installed software it does come with is un-installable. - The SSD and HDD offer plenty of space, you can move system files to the HDD and reserve the SSD for game storage. - It's easy to open and upgrade if you need to. - The V light on the front is customizable in color and brightness and offers a nice little touch.
Cons: - While gaming, although I've had no performance issues, the fans do run a bit loud. This noise can usually be drowned out though with headphones and your game audio, so not a huge deal. - The top of the PC tends to get quite hot while gaming too. Again performance isn't affected, but something to keep in mind. - If you plan on multitasking with heavy applications, like a game and Chrome running, you might benefit from upgrading the RAM to 32GB. I've noticed some frame drops while playing a game and having Chrome open in the background, that stop when Chrome is closed.
Overall would highly recommend to anyone looking to get a gaming PC, especially getting a 3060 and all these specs at this price!
The machine is much faster than I expected. I'm not a gamer, but I need a powerful machine for occasional work with graphics and video. I run many open applications during any given day and this machine handles it without a sweat.
