With this computer, I'm not sure if I am just slightly underwhelmed, or really quite disappointed, or neither.
I bought this machine because I had to - why? Because my really good Windows 10 pc cannot be upgraded to Windows 11, as it does not have the TPM 2.0 chip on its old board, and I do take security pretty seriously these days. That pc is itself an HP Pavilion machine, and I love it.
On paper, this new TP01-5014na is an efficient machine, packed with high spec; 1TB and 2TB hard drives, the mighty 14700F processor, 32GB RAM, the high-end 4060 graphics card, a handy DVD drive, and all with no more than 350 watts of electricity. In my computing life, I have gone from Windows 3.1 to Millenium Edition to 2000 Professional to xp to Vista to 8, then 8.1 (five minutes later) then to 10 (Professional) and now to Windows 11 (upgraded by me to Professional).
As a starting point, the transfer of files and programmes from 10 to 11, on a different machine, was the easiest new start that I have ever done. Although the Restore from File History did not work, it was no trouble to just move files on portable drives, and off I went. Signing in with my Microsoft account helped things along regarding programmes from my old computer. Had I unlinked my old computer from onedrive before linking the new one, I would have saved myself some trouble duplicating files - my mistake.
So why am I not jumping for joy? Well the first thing I noticed was that the fans soon sounded a bit noisy. On installing some trusted pc monitoring software, I am told that the cpu is running at about 75-80°C at 10-15% cpu load. My old machine runs about 20 degrees lower with the cpu doing twice the work. Maybe I'm out of date, but that seems odd to me. HP don't think so though, but it explains the fan noise, so not as quiet as I had expected, to put it politely. Next, I should be clear about the DVD drive. It's vertically mounted with a spindle, compared to (yes, my old one), horizontally mounted with no spindle. Try watching a film and you might want headphones on to save yourself from the whining noise. To be fair, DVD/CD enjoyment on computers is no doubt less prevalent than in earlier times, and it is really helpful if you have a spurious driver on a disc, but, as I said at the start...Then there is Windows 11. I guess I will come to accept one day that this is the future, but for getting on with things with no froth and no crashes, you can't beat Windows 10 for me (yet). Granted, that is no fault of this computer.
My main thing with this computer is that I am a bit unconvinced that it is really up to the job. I am anxious that the cpu is too hot. I fully accept that I might be wrong, and I hope I am. The fan noise is not the end of the world, but it is getting on my nerves, and the youngest's gaming computer is running cooler with less racket and it's Windows 11 too.
It would be interesting to see how this desktop compares with another one of a similar spec, but I can't order four at once and send three back. So, for me, the jury's out.
