Imagination instructions!
on June 20, 2022
Posted by: Ry Whisky
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this for my 4.5yr old son and I think it’s his most-player-with Lego toy. The instructions are video from an app and kept him engaged and building it in his own for SO much longer than he normally does. More than anything though, the instructions give you creative freedom on building it along the way! They’ll give you a few different ideas but the final build is original and your own.
The boy hasn’t put it down for two weeks straight so it’s already worth it’s weight in $$. I’ll definitely be looking for this series again!

A Somewhat Unwelcome Departure from LEGO
on July 8, 2022

My 5 year old loves building LEGOs and is a very proficient solo builder of sets this size. These new Missions sets mean he HAS to access the app, which is annoying. I understand this is the way things are going, but he doesn't have his own tablet, so he needs to use a parent's phone to build these sets. Additionally, he wants to get straight to building and really doesn't love the missions aspect. Obviously LEGO encourages creativity and this is a neat way to do it, but when my son gets a set, he is eager to make it as instructed and that's just not really possible with these sets.
If he ever takes this apart and wants to rebuild, there are no traditional instructions available. You have to do the full mission again! If there were full instructions available online for the main part of each set---the spaceship in this set (I understand there wouldn't be instructions for the smaller items) after you do the missions, that would be enough for me to give this an overall 5 stars.
That said, this is pretty creative and I'm sure it's a lot of fun for a lot of people. Just be forewarned that you have to use the app, and it takes longer than usual to build since the missions have you create small items of your own design along the way.

Needs option besides app

Can only access instructions through an app that is not compatible with kids fire tablet. Other Lego apps are on the fire tablet so I did not verify compatibility and gave this to my son for Christmas. Now he cannot build it. At least Lego could have an optional instruction PDF available on the website to download but they don't... If more Lego sets go this way for building instructions, I'll save a ton of money since we will not purchase them

An awesome experience
on August 12, 2022

While I’ve been a Lego fan my whole life, I fell out around middle school and got back in while I was in college. Fast forward ten years and here I am, working adult who gets new Lego every now and then as a hobby.
The problem I always run into with the new sets I buy, however, is that my adult brain feels too rigid and unimaginative (I’m an accountant lol) and I always fail to do anything creative with the pieces I have because my brain can’t break free of the instructions; in fact, many times I get frustrated at the mere thought of customization because I’ve been trained as an adult to view the sets as collectibles or display pieces. Of course there are plenty of sets that are just that, but sometimes that’s not what I really want out of Lego. This is where this set and the entire “missions” line steps in.
To me, missions does an amazing job of reinforcing the idea that Lego is a toy intended first and foremost to foster creativity. As long as there are instructions, there is an opportunity for anyone building to think that the instructions are the only way to use those pieces. Since this set and the two others of the same type do not feature traditional instructions, you are FORCED to be creative. What I like about this concept over, say, the “classic” sets is that while there are no “rules” with your building, there are guidelines and inspiration. Many times, I feel lost when trying to create my own thing because I don’t have a baseline. This set provides the baseline and a carefully curated assortment of pieces which will fit right into any of the possibilities. Unlike free building with any of the bricks you own, these are color accurate and theme-specific. Because of this, it isn’t a matter of figuring out what piece you want out of your inventory of thousands, but rather which piece do I need out of these hundred.
As a result, and kind of my conclusion, I spent an hour or more with this set on my first night of ownership and it honestly rekindled my love of Lego for what it is meant to be and has inspired me to start kind of reassessing the other sets I have and take a similar approach with those pieces. My mind feels free and active and that’s what Lego is all about, not scouring the shelves at your local store or bricklink to amass a high-value collection.
I really hope there are more of these types of sets in the future, maybe even bigger with more complex and robust possibilities.

Not worth it
on January 1, 2024

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my great nephew who is almost 5. There were literally no instructions for this. You have to use the lego app and the instructions there are still terribly vague. Not worth the time, money or headache. Worst lego purchase ever. So disappointed

We’re sorry to hear you’re not happy with your LEGO® set, and we appreciate your feedback. Our City Mission sets use videos in the LEGO Building Instructions app to deliver a story that unleashes imagination and creativity for a more interactive play experience. Brief digital building instructions are provided in-app to give a foundational model to get our fans started. An in-app vs printed solution allows us to make this experience available to more kids in their own languages! Great variety of pieces
on August 16, 2022

I like these mission packs. They do not have a lot of "bulk" pieces like bricks and plates, but the pieces you get tend to be either unique (like the printed pieces or the shiny geodes) or functional in some way. For this reason I think this would not make for a good standalone set but is a great way of adding spark and complexity to a set you already own. Also, no stickers, and I am blown away by the immaculate detail of these new printed pieces!

I have built a lot of Lego sets but this is the first one I built with a mission thing and I love every thing about it and it is one of the first Lego sets that have surprised me with a interesting twist and that’s why i love this set.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Never seen a happier child than mine after playing with this Lego set. She is constantly creating new exploration stories in with this set and adding on to it with other sets. Really opens up the mind!
