Frustrated
on August 10, 2023
Posted by: Chas
I have built approximately 23 LEGO sets prior to this one and this one, unfortunately was the most disappointing for several reasons: 1) The blue base the entire unit sits on is too flimsy. Moving it to work on the unit causes parts to pop off and the lighthouse assembly is just too heavy for it. 2) The two assembly booklets, yes there are two, as those familiar with assembling LEGO kits, list the pieces step by step, but in this case, they do not outline in red (unlike other assembly booklets I have encountered), exactly fit on the assembled piece, which cause some frustration and confusion. Theses red outlines are not always needed but are in some cases. 3) For the first time, I encountered two pages in the assembly booklets where the assembly diagrams/pictures were so blurred during the printing process, they are rendered useless, I could no discern where the pieces went or how they were assembled. I had to look at the past assembly and next assembly diagrams to make a guestimate what the blurred assembly pictures wanted me to do. 5) Finally, the second light that illuminates the fireplace from the rear is a complete waste. It can't be seen unless one removes the roof of the lighthouse keeper's cabin! The second light should have been better employed to illuminate the porch light or a window in the lighthouse itself in my estimation.

I adore sets that have function; I love learning while building. The design is beautiful and the functionality is so smart. I found myself saying “brilliant” throughout the build. I was reluctant to purchase this set when it came out but decided I did not want to miss out on it before it retired. So glad I ordered it! It was one of the most satisfying builds; the build is not repetitive at all and I learned some great new building techniques. I am a collector that builds and dismantles every set I own due to space issues. But this one will be staying up for a while. So satisfying on my shelf. (Side note: I was also pleasantly surprised that the rotating pieces used that are permanently combined once connected can be used over and over again, unlike the carrousel. So I will have no issues taking this set apart and rebuilding it as many times as I desire. “Brilliant!”)

Fun, Rewarding Build

Despite its slightly heavy price tag, the included motor and light features make this a truly spectacular piece. It was a fun build where every couple of bags you are working on something different so it's not repetitive like some other large scale builds. Having the functioning, rotating light at the very end was a nice final reward which looks great as a display piece.

Must have

This set has exceeded my expectations in all ways, from the ultra clever way to build the base in 3D, to the finished LEGO set. It’s incredible to say the least & pictures don’t do it justice. If you’re in the fence about this purchase, I found it to be a wonderful build. Cheers!

Takes a bit to get exciting but so worth it

Built this over 5 days, limiting myself to 3-4 bags a day. There was a nice buildup to completing the landscape but it really started to come together at bag 10. It has its flaws, but was worth every minute on it. There are 4 negatives to me. The somewhat exposed wire for the fireplace, the door to the living quarters not filling up the opening, the crampedness of the living quarters, and the noise of the motor. These are very easy to overlook, other than the loud motor. I'll be modifying another motor to make it quiter and I think I'll be fully satisfied. Overall I'd give this a 9.8/10. It was really enjoyable to put together and I looked forward to adding more the next day. It's also a wonderful display piece and I enjoy turning it on for a while each day. I really think this is one of the most enjoyable sets I've owned over the last 25 years and definitely worth saving up or stretching the budget for.

Nice little set

Enjoyable set to put together. Love the lore they include with some of the parts and of the lighthouse in general. Like playing with it, letting the light spin for hours. Mechanism is kind of loud but not a huge issue.

A Bright Set That’s a Little Dim
on March 14, 2023

This is a gorgeous, WONDERFUL, set for any and all Lego collectors. There are so many wonderful details and clever secrets to discover, and it is an ABSOLUTE BLAST to build.
However, I wouldn’t count on getting too much enjoyment of the actual light. My first set of batteries ran out pretty quickly, and I purchased some rechargeable batteries as an alternate. All told, you can expect about 24 hours of light from a fresh set of batteries. That’s not a lot of time for batteries that take some effort to replace.
However, I must repeat, this is a set I will cherish forever.

I Approve

I confess, I was somewhat hesitant, and didn’t immediately buy this set like I typically do. This was one of the few sets where I waited to read some reviews, and well done fellow Lego builders, I ended up purchasing. I love how detailed this set is! My very minor criticism, I would like Lego to come up with a somewhat sturdier bottom base plate for sets like this one. Six batteries add a lot of weight. Size of the plate was right, just possible thickness of the bottom base plate for future sets.
