In love with my ex4

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm a weber fan for life. My first grill back in my twenties was a cheapo that rusted apart within 3 years. A friend of mine suggested paying more for a weber and said it would last. So here I am 20 years later, my Weber Genesis is still going strong. Last year, I heard that you had introduced a smoker, and I was intrigued. My wife casually observed me watching videos of the smokefire, and surprised me on Xmas with the EX4. Best wife ever might I add. So far the performance of the EX4 Gen2 has been flawless. I've done long cooks, slow cooks, ribs and more ribs, everything comes out great! Everything about the EX4 feels great, excellent weber quality. Oh and the app works great, very intuitive. Also, I thought it was great that the smokefire is made in the USA. If you're looking for a smoker, look no further.

New Smokefire EX4

I love my new Smokefire Ex4. I have had this grill for 4 weeks now and cooked on it at least 10 times. I bought it to cook low and slow and to also cook at high heat of 550-600 deg. Everything I have cooked on it so far has come out perfect. What is impressive is how quickly it heats up to 550 deg (approx 11 mins) which is almost as fast as my 6 burner gas grill. Because it heats up so quickly, I have used it to grill skirt steak (6-8mins), salmon (8 mins), pork chops etc instead of cooking these on my gas grill. I get the additional benefit of great mesquite or hickory smoke flavor on these that I don't on the gas grill. This is the main reason I bought the weber smokefire vs the other brands, the ability to grill at 500-600 deg whereas other brands only get to 400-450 degs. I have also made ribs, low and slow and it worked great as well. I have not done the longer slow cooks like pork shoulder or brisket yet, but that is next on my list.I also like the use of flavor bar vs large metal trays that other pellets have and it's easier to clean internally that my gas grill. Quick shop vac and asj is gone. the grease management tray works great as well. Super easy to clean. So far, this grill has met all my expectations. I did purchase the optional front shelf which I wish came standard as it is needed fr additional prep or just to hold the tray of meat you are about to cook. the only complaint I have are the locking casters. They are not great because even if both front lockers are locked and you place all wheels facing the same direction, the grill still moves when opening the lid or cleaning the grates. I don't have this issue on gas grill or my Weber Performer charcoal grill.

Several Issues

The SmokeFire arrived with 2 non-working wheels and no emblem on the front of the grill, just 2 holes. Those issues were easy enough to correct through Weber Customer Service. These easy to spot details were not found prior to shipment and makes me wonder if any quality assurance was done. It gives me considerable doubts about the operation of the rest of the unit. Indeed, I wasn't even able to get through the original seasoning without malfunctions. I downloaded the app and did the required updates, loaded the hopper with about 1/2 bag Weber pellets and when it got to around 400 F the pellets stopped loading. Pushed the pellets back toward the Auger and added more pellets and set the temp back to 600 and waited. No increase in temperature. Checked the grill and the auger was pushing out pellets but was not lighting them, causing the pellets to collect on the bottom of the grill. Cleaned out the unspent pellets and took the unit back apart and confirmed that the glow plug was working, it just didn't burn the pellets, 3rd attempt to season the grill got to 600. I thought that Weber had corrected the issues on Gen 1, but I am not convinced. When you have a brand new product and have 2 separate malfunctions during the seasoning, something is wrong. Also concerning is that they give you 2 extra glow plugs. Why would they do that, unless they expect them to fail early and often? The app is very simple and constantly notifies you of low fuel even if you have a substantial amount of pellets in the hopper. This appears to be due to the location of the sensor on the opposite side of the ramp the pellets descend. It also blows pellet dust/ash everywhere. I purchased this unit with great hope, I have many friends with lower end units that function simply and consistently. I wanted to be able to set it and forget it, but it looks like I will have to tend to the pellets constantly and continually check the temperature to make sure it is working. The lid also did not close on one side and left about 1/4" gap, so I had to have a new one sent out, but it still does not close snugly on both sides. Weber customer service gets an A+, but the grill itself gets an F-.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your SmokeFire. We are sorry to hear about the casters and the missing emblem. These items should be included, and we are sorry to hear that they weren’t. We will share this feedback with the appropriate team! Gen 2 includes glow plugs as they are a consumable part. They can be stored away while not needed. We are glad that our support team could assist you with this. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. We are here to help! If you continue to have issues, don't hesitate to get in touch with us directly. Thanks!

Smart and amazing grill

I have been using this grill for about 6 months and absolutely love it. Everything that is cook on this tastes amazing. I use this grill sometime 3 or 4 times a week, but at least weekly weather permitting. I feel bad calling it just a "grill" because it can do so much. I have cooked lunches, dinners, desserts, pizzas, and even baked breads on this grill. I enjoy this so much that I am actually sad when I do not get to use it. The ability to precisely dial in a temperature allows for so many different food options. I wasn't sure I would use the smart temperature probe when I bought the grill, but it has completely won me over. The smart probe takes all the guess work out of a lot of food I would not have normally tried to grill or smoke. The Weber design team and engineers did an amazing job with the SmokeFire. I cannot thank them enough for the thought and design they put into this compact machine. Also, I would like to thank the Weber team in Australia & New Zealand and their great SmokeFire YouTube videos, because that really helped me get started and to get use to cooking with the SmokeFire. As far as I am concerned this is the only grill I will ever need or want.

A solid performance

First time with a pellet grill. I am a master chef and managed some of the top restaurants in the country. For my whole career I have cooked with a wood fire and am used to the flavor. I have tried 8 different brands of wood on my Smokefire grill. I can’t quite get the smoke flavor of burning real wood. But I don’t have to stay up all night managing a fire either. It is a learning curve.
I have found to add a 1/2 sized pan and place it on the flavorizer bars to block direct heat and the fats from dripping near the fire and flaring up. And has provided a more consistent experience.
Overall, I like the grill. I have no experience with any other pellet, but I do know I have had less issues than I have heard from other brands.

Temperature Drops

Temperature drops all the time. Auger has a hard time feeding pellets. Constantly have to babysit and stuff pellets down the feeder. Have spoken with customer service multiple times and received the new auger and conversion kit last year. Still same problems. Please weber help me, too much money was spent on this to just toss it aside. I hate telling people my expereince with it, because the end result and the way it should work is amazing.
