Disappointed- SmokeFire EX6 (2nd Gen)

First off, I am a true fan of Weber, their products, and product support. I have had 2 Genesis and 2 Kettle Grills. I have experience with two competitive brand of pellet grills through friends. I read and researched the 2nd Gen of SmokeFire and felt confident in Weber based on past experiences that they had corrected issues after their initial launch. The main reason why I purchased the SmokeFire versus a competitive brand was the 600 degree high temperature for grilling and their idea of incorporating their flavorizer bars on their pellet grill that they are known for. My disappointment lies with the following:
Pellets get stuck in the hopper and fall short of feeding to the auger. I have had it happen once where it even shut down the grill during cooking racks of ribs (In fairness I was down in my basement and lost connection with the grill). Towards the end of long cools I am currently getting notifications that I need to add more pellets.
The right side gets noticeably hotter than the left. Example, just yesterday I was cooking at 275 degrees. The right side got done before the left. I placed the probes down through the top grates to about two inches above the main grate to check temperature and they showed 351 and 354 degrees.
The bottom of the grill catches fire, increases temperature, and burns food if not careful. I would not consider this a grease fire as it does end up going out. None the less, the ash/dust mixed with grease catches fire. I expect to have to clean the grill throughly after a long cook, but not after EVERY “grilling” type cook and not even after two or three “grilling” type cooks. However, if you don’t you have fires. For long cooks I have placed a foil pan on top of the flavorizer bars only to have to be really careful not to spill the grease everywhere. In my experience with other makes of pellet grills the separation of the burn pot, ash, and dust seems to have merit. I understand I chose the go the route without the separation and in the case of Weber have the flavorizer bars, but unfortunately I am second guessing my decision.
If you do not keep the software version updated, you have instances where pellets are fed into the pot without lighting, then when you do have it light you have heavy smoke until they burn off.
I have used my SmokeFire about 12 or 13 times and it is going on 2 months old. I hope to keep learning about it and figure out how to make it work.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hello, thank you for being a long-time Weber fan and for taking the time to share your feedback. We are here to help address some of the issues that you shared. We want you to have the best possible experience with your SmokeFire grill.
We are sorry to hear that your pellets got stuck in the hopper. The key to good pellet flow is to use good quality pellets. Ideally, Weber pellets. You want to use pellets that are fresh and intact. Always avoid pellets that have dust or are broken down, which can happen if you or a dealer store them in humid environments, handle them roughly, or if the bag is left open for some time. The pellets should have a crisp snap when broken instead of tearing or ripping apart.
When you get down to the lower 1/3 or so of your pellets in the hopper, you will see that they start to line up on the slide but they are still flowing. We agree that proper maintenance is essential to getting the best experience from your grill, whether it's a pellet, gas, or charcoal grill.
When doing longer cooks or grilling fatter cuts we suggest using a water pan underneath the food directly above the Flavorizer bars to help catch the grease dripping and make the cleaning easier for your next cook. Click here to view the drip pans: https://www.weber.com/US/en/accessories/accessories-by-category/cleaning/foil-pans/6416.html.
We are delighted to hear that you have done 13 cooks on your SmokeFire these past 2 months! We are confident this is the right grill for you. We will reach out via email to ensure these tips help and that your grill is working properly. Thanks!

SmokeFire 2 is a success!

Love my new grill. It can do anything I want on it. From low slow smoking to high heat searing. You can get 600+ *F with SmokeFire 2 which is very impressive for a pellet grill. Haven’t had any of the issues that plagued the original SmokeFire. In good old Weber fashion they strive for perfection and came pretty close on this one. Only thing I wished for is bigger wheels. Although, the ones on the grill are very strong and do the job, I prefer the big wheels on my Genesis whenever I have to roll it around. With that said, I highly recommend this grill.

Love the EX6

It’s big, more cooking surface than I imagined. You should purchase size by how much you grill and slow cook and I’m pretty sure EX6 uses more pallets:) Not a lot of storage-prep space, plan on accessorizing or adjusting your cooking area.

Congratulations on your new grill and thank you for your feedback. We are excited to learn that your experience with your SmokeFire has been overall positive.
We appreciate your suggestion about having a temperature display during SmokeBoost. We are always trying to evolve our products and your feedback is an important part of that process.

Just as an extra piece of information, we recommend that you use SmokeBoost at the start of a low & slow cook with food such as brisket, pork shoulder, poultry, and fish that will be smoked at low temps on your grill.

Smoky flavor penetrates cold, raw meat best. That is why it is important to select SmokeBoost at the beginning of your cook to add a smoky, wood-fired flavor to your food.
Our Support team is going to contact you to make sure that you have everything you need. Please look for our email soon.

Thanks again for being a SmokeFire fan and part of the Weber family!

Smoker shut down.

Love the smoker, but I left it unattended for 5-6 hours and it shut down. The reason being is the pellets stopped feeding into the fire box. I put a 20 lb bag in before I left, had plenty of pellets still in the hopper, but the pellets seemed to have gotten stuck and would not feed anymore. Maybe a steeper hopper would be the fix. Other than that I love the smoker.

Thank you for your feedback. We are excited to learn that you love your new SmokeFire grill. We understand your frustration at the shutdown caused by your pellets causing a blockage. Occasionally this "pellet void" can happen, though using Weber pellets can help cut down on the occurrence. We also recommend remaining within visual distance of the grill when grilling not only to help prevent shutdown from pellet blockage, but also for safety reasons. Our Support team would like to know more about what happened and offer our assistance with any other questions or concerns you may have. Thanks again for being a SmokeFire fan and part of the Weber family.

Use of thin sheet metal.

I wanted to love this grill, even didn’t believe the negative reviews. The thin gauge galvanized sheet metal used will NEVER hold up, and there is a lot of it.
I like it otherwise, but the sheet metal will not hold up, so I am thinking of sending it back after only a couple of weeks.
I bought 180 lbs of pellets when ordering grill, only because I had every intention to keep it. I still have over a hundred pounds of pellets.

Smokefire Is My New Best Friend

I’ve used mine for over 100 hours. Done briskets, ribs, pork, chicken, sides, as well as reverse seared steaks and roasts. Clean up is easy compared to my Smokey Mountain. I did have a single issue where with the latest software, the computer on the SmokeFire froze up and stalled my cook, but I caught it within 20 minutes to save the cook. Even though that made me nervous for overnight cooks, it’s still more predictable than charcoal with about 95% of the smoke flavor. I still have and use my Smokey Mountain, but it’s no longer my primary smoker. I’ve also not touched my Weber Spirit propane grill since buying this, which means that my dad will be getting that soon. Great overall product and I am happy that I went with it.
