Big beautiful beast

This is a big grill. Best for large groups. Didn't realize how big until it arrived. In retrospect, I could have gotten by with the smaller model, but happy none the less. Cooks beautifully smoked meats with little effort. Did some ribs and chicken breast so far and was very happy with the results. I found that I don't use the app much for control, but happy to be able to monitor the grill with the app.
I've been a Genesis owner for 30 years, and my gas grill is still going strong. The smoker grill will be a nice complement. Being able to cook low and slow with lots of smoke adds so much to many meats. I'm counting on Weber quality and support to keep my new grill working as long as the old one.
My only gripe is that the pellet hopper can be difficult to fill without spilling. If the lid was hinged the other way, it would be easier to fill (from the back).

Sorry for the long read but this is more of a review of my full experience with Smokefire and not just my recent EX6 purchase. I am a early adopter with a Smokefire EX4 Gen 1. Despite all the bad press the Smokefire received on launch my EX4 has been going strong on all original gen 1 parts. It gets used frequently and after almost 2 years I've only had to replace a glow plug once. We have another big brand of pellet grill at the firehouse that took the slow boat ride from China to get here (Smokefire is built in the good ol USA) and the Smokefire blows it away when you compare quality of materials, fit, finish, and the product it produces. After using the station's "brand-t" grill I didn't know you could get a smoke ring from pellets until now. I was at Lowe's right before Thanksgiving to pick up pellets and they had the EX6 discounted so i figured the EX4 needed a big brother. If the 2nd gen EX6 keeps running like the 1st gen EX4, I'll be extremely satisfied. I just hope they drop a update for the app so I don't have to delete the one I'm not using to pair the one I am.

Great grill and has worked without any issues except one one Christmas day. Auger jam and had to shut down and tear apart. App didn't tell me temp was dropping till it was down to 100.

We appreciate your feedback! We loved hearing that you have been having a great time with your SmokeFire grill, minus the notable exception. We apologize for the frustration you experienced when your auger jammed on Christmas.

There are some things you can do to help avoid an auger jam, like using fresh Weber pellets and making sure pellet dust doesn't build up in the hopper chute, for example.

It means a lot to us that you still rated your grill highly despite that hiccup. Thanks for sticking with us! Our Support team is sending a follow-up email now to offer some tips for avoiding future auger jams. Thanks again and happy grilling!

Unreliable Grill

An offset smoker box requires less attention and is more reliable than the Weber SmokeFire.
I bought this grill after my old pellet cooker finally died. The Weber Smokey Mountain and the Weber Performer worked so well, I thought the Weber SmokeFire was a no-brainer (based on brand name alone). However, I was wrong. After 6 months of cooking with it, these are my results:
- I have never completed a cook that lasts over 2 hours without it shutting down (30 plus attempts; 0-30)
- Sometimes it shuts down in the first 30 minutes (with a full hopper of pellets)
- When it shuts down, it is not a quick fix. Specifically, The grill has to be completely broken down, allowed to cool, pellets vacuumed out, and finally, go through the 15 minute shut down cycle once you restart the CPU.
- After cooking an item with significant grease (pork butt, ribs, etc.) if you turn the temp up past 450, you may burn the house down, as the grease just pools to the bottom near the flame causing a grease fire.
- The grill's operating system has about a 10% chance of freezing up and allowing the fire to go out; however, you will not know this, because the system thinks the grill is still at the preprogrammed temperature. As a result, you do not get any notifications from the app that a failure has occurred.
I have been an engineer for over 20 years. My professional determination is that Weber is failing in the area of integration and test. All of the problems the grill is having are obvious design issues and could have been quickly adjudicated in the testing phase.

The EX6 is the most versatile grill I have owned.

Having owned the EX6 since March I can truthfully say this is an amazing grill. It does everything I was hoping it would do concerning the food cooking for my family. I use the grill 3 to 4 times a week for all types of grilling and smoking meats and vegetables.
Do not be deceived, it is not a set it and forget grill, you still need to cook and tend to the smoking process. What it does do is take fire management out of the equation, and at 72 YO that is a gift that allows me to use a grill more often.
I recently had a more complex problem with the EX6 after Thanksgiving and it was fixed before Christmas. The Weber customer service team was exceptional with helping me resolve the problem. When you purchase a piece of equipment this expensive you expect decent customer service and Weber exceeded my expectations. I have owned Weber grills for over 40 years now and appreciate the availability of parts to maintain my grills.
The EX6 does need to be cleaned and when I first started to look at the EX6 when it first came on the market, I thought it would be a cleaning nightmare, but I was wrong. I use a small drip tray under the meat to catch the fat renderings from larger cut of meat. Keep my grates cleaned and wipe down the exterior after every cook. Sweep the ashes into the ash pan and wipe down the interior after every 3 to 5 cooks. Another task, which is not hard at all, is to sift the pellets before placing them into the hopper to cut down on pellet dust. Pellet dust and/or non-pellet debris in the bag of pellets, IMHO, was the probable cause of my EX6 problem. All grills need cleaning and maintenance and the EX6 is no exception. Another good practice is to cover and unplug the grill after every use.
In closing since I have added the EX6 to my outside kitchen, my WSM and Kettle grills are not seeing much love.

I like it!

I have about 20 cooks on this now and have been really pleased with its performance. I haven't had any issues with the hopper/feeder, augur, or ignitor using B&B Championship Blend and Knotty Wood Plum (produces a lot of ash). Most everything has worked really well and I'm quite happy with the purchase and the results (I've done a number of briskets, butts, ribs, chucks, and chickens now). The only issue I do have on occasion (3 times that I remember ) is when it gets cold outside (20ish degrees), sometimes it wont load (on screen) appropriately. Sometimes the screen will stay blank, once it did nothing but light up, and once it had a line that circled the perimeter of the screen. On all occasions, turning the power off and back on cleared the issue and I was able to continue. One other gripe I have is with the length of the temp probes; the included probes are fine if you're cooking on the right side or center of the smoker but are about 2-3' short of being good on anything left of center. Last up, I wish the upper rack was stiffer (sags a bit with a couple things up there) and a little wider so you could slide it out to access all sides of your food easier.

Thank you for your being a long time Weber fan! We greatly appreciate your feedback regarding the Smokefire EX 6.

We are glad to hear you are enjoying your grill and are pleased with its performance.

However, we apologize for the disappointment you are experiencing with the controller not cooperating when it is cold outside.

Our team appreciates your feedback regarding the probes not being long enough and the warming rack sagging, this will definitely be passed along for consideration.

Please look for an email from our Support team soon. Thanks!

ok weber you did it again, I originally bought the ex6 when it first came out, { I do mean when it first hit the floor} and I had several issues w/ the unit in the first year, and weber stood behind their product on every issue I have been a costumer of weber products for over 25 years and God willing 25 more, the performance of the first grill was top shelf, But weber decided that there were to many upgrades and parts were on back order all the time, so yes you guessed it they shipped me a brand new Gen 2 Ex6, Now how's that for customer service, Hats off to Ya weber Keep up the Good work

Useless, a total waste of money

I bought this as a grill, for medium - hot uncomplicated fast cooks like Wings, Steaks, Burgers etc. turns out it either will never reach 450F+ or if it reaches temp, it will drop within 10-15min. It is either the auger that's jamming or the pellets don't slide (I use original Weber).
From all Cookes I made, only 1 time I could successfully finish. I will never use this thing again, meat is too expensive to waste it.
