[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I upgraded to the ThinkPad P15v from an older ThinkPad W550S that I've been using for years. (For the record, the W550S is still running great! It's just getting a little slow for some modern software.) The only mistake I made with the upgrade was thinking I had a 1TB drive in the W550S rather than the 2TB I had installed in it. So the disk on my P15v is a little small, but that's on me.
So far the P15v has exceeded my expectations. The performance is better than my older laptop in every way. Disk I/O is much faster, as are the graphics. I primarily use my laptop for 3D CAD, photo editing, and audio editing.
3D CAD is almost startlingly smooth now. I tried loading some of my larger models and spun them around to see how fast it could do real-time rendering, and it was seamless.
It took me a while to migrate my photo library to my new machine, but again, that's a relfection of my network speed and not the new laptop. Once everything was on the P15v Lightroom and Photoshop ran like a dream. Running through large catalogs of images was a little slow on my W550s, but on the P15v the next image would load as soon as I hit the key to advance. Very very pleased.
Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to try editing any audio yet.
The one concern I have is that it runs a little warmer than my older computer. I routinely work above 4000m of altitude where there's only about 60% of the air to work with. My older computer ran cool enough that this was never a problem. I'll have to see how the P15v fares up there. I did find that if I pulled the power supply and let it run on battery power, everything cooled down very quickly. So chances are there are some power saving functions I can play with when using it at altitude.
All in all the P15v is a solid performer. The only thing I'd really change is to upgrade to 2TB of storage, and that's just a personal preference based on the work I do. If you're not working with large data sets, 1TB would probably be fine.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It's a little heavy and the fan is noisy. I'm not sure the extra speed and power is really noticeable. I would have preferred the X1 ThinkPad because it's quieter, but I didn't want to wait 8 months to ship. I wouldn't recommend for gaming because there's no display port, and the graphics card isn't made for it.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] had some glitches from the get go and support could not figure out how to ship the replacement to my current address, so returned it and getting a different brand.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
