Thin Bezels or one handed use.

I was lured by the smart dock, but as it turns out, it's not that smart as all it does is charge the tablet and has no data capabilities. That being said, it is a rather hefty dock. Though plastic, it has some sort of weight inside which makes it feel heavier than it looks. Performance wise, from power off, to power on and ready to login or work takes under 30 seconds.
My previous A8-50 which this one is to replace. That one took almost 2 minutes to fully boot and load. And it only ran Android 4.4. This one came with Android 9, but on first power-up, it began upgrading to Android 10. Now my only other experience with Android 10 is my Samsung Galaxy A5 phone which is being replaced soon.
On the Samsung, I had the ability to flip the location and order of the back/home/context menu buttons. So I thought it was an Android bonus as I've only ever owned Samsungs, but know Motorola and LG models which also had that ability. So the first thing I did was look for it. Well. It's not an Android thing as this M8 does not have that ability. The only one it does have is gesture control, and the ability to switch to a two button layout instead of three. Hmm..
Android 10 was supposed to include new security features, dark mode and even full support for Facial recognition. When I programmed my phone for Facial recognition, it had me use different lighting, smile, not smile, glasses on and off to learn the metrics of my face. The Lenovo version pales in comparison and simply took a single snap of may face and claims it has learned. Well, if you don't use the exact same lighting as when creating the Facial recognitioning file, it won't unlock. My Samsung A5 even can use Facial recognition in the dark. This Lenovo, meh... if you don't have the exact or similar lighting, it won't recognize us.
Now the bonus of this tablet is the Dolby chip which makes using this as a music driver and the fact it has twin stereo speakers. My A8-50 only had a single speaker, but it too had the Dolby chip. But what it also had was active satellite GPS tracking which does not require WiFi or data. This M8 has GPS tracking, but it requires WiFi or data. Oh and it does connect to 2.4/5.0 Ghz services. My old one only did 2.4 even though it's specs claim it does both. My home internet service is Rogers and so far my max WiFi speed has been 454Mbps on a 250Mpbs service plan. Woohoo!!!

Google Ambient doesn't work consistently

Ambient feature is a gimmick. I can't get the slideshow to work, it stops randomly, and doesn't seem to properly lock and unlock. I was excited to have it work like my nest hub or google home, but it doesn't... at least not consistently.

Ok basic tablet function, poor as Google assistant
on June 19, 2021

My main reason to buy this tablet was to use it as a dedicated kitchen device with Google assistant. I tried to set the device to ambient mode and with external speakers plugged into the headphone jack. Unfortunately the ambient mode would not run consisitently and wouldn't respond to my voice commands (despite playing around with many settings and reading various forums for setup tips, as others seems to have the same problem). It seems to be particular worse with the external speakers plugged in (which did have much better sound than a stand alone Google device). The ambient mode screen is also very basic and boring and there not many options to customize it to look better. As for it's tablet function, I found it very sluggish and not very responsive to my touch controls. The screen was decent for it's specs (don't expect super sharp vibrant images and videos) and colors were ok. I did like the size of it as I could hold it easily in one land in portrait mode. But it failed for my main purpose which was a dedicated Google assistant device for kitchen use.

Lenovo/Google have not fixed the Google assistant
on June 27, 2021

The main reason to get this tablet was the assistant feature when docked, now it's not working and Lenovo or Google haven't fixed that sin last year, now it's a common tablet

Excellent Value, single shortcoming

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great Tablet for the price. Perfect for a business. Almost perfect for developing an Android app.
The only downside I found was that I was unable to connect in developer mode when attached via the stand. It worked fine when directly connected to the computer.

Lenovo Android tablet is really coming of age

Hardware is excellent in terms of performance and value but software still needs refinement, particularly the Google Ambient Display, which does not quite work as intelligently and consistently as a Google Hub or Lenovo Smart Display. Still this Lenovo-Google product is clearly superior to either the Amazon or Samsung equivalent in the market.
