Go to for camera gear (over the 45L bag even)

I got the 45L travel backpack with the Kickstarter, and it has been my go-to for all of my optics on any travel trip. I usually carry a spotting scope, DSLR, 200-500mm lens, and a few walkaround lenses.
So why choose the smaller bag over it? Easy answer is you will never be asked to check the 30L. Even in a smaller plane, or when over-head space is full, in a pinch the 30L will fit under your seat. The extra room I had in the 45L after getting in the large camera cube wasn't enough to make it truly one bag travel (it probably would if I didn't need that size cube) but I also like having a bag that keeps everything I don't want checked, and a second carry-on that I can comfortably check if needed.
Four stars because the design of the bag betrays that it was done on the cheap from the 45L, without thinking about how this was different. The interior pockets are on the bottom of the storage space, for example, so you have to remove everything to access them. Not particularly useful...
It is also missing the two stealth exterior pockets of the 45L, but the expanded exterior pocket is nice. All in all a really solid bag, and as noted, only stays home on trips where I need a more technical pack for extended hiking.

Awesome backpack, some limitations

The design is great. Two things are bothering me:
1) There is a severe lack of quick storage. I get the clean aesthetic but the sleeve for the luggage handle is just wasted space. I wish the top compartment just went all the way down or at least closed with a zipper. Don’t have any interest in putting a backpack into luggage personally.
The second thing is the sternum clasp is hard to use so I don’t use it much. Would prefer something more typical, I know buckles break but the hook is challenging.
Other than that it’s a beautiful bag, durable, lots of space.

Very functional bag for day travel

We use this bag for smaller day trips out with the kids. Very roomy with lots of well organised pockets for storage. Easily fits a couple of drink bottles, pencils, drawing pads, etc. Can stuff kids jackets in with the useful expansion.
Only criticism - there is only one zip to access the main storage compartment. Because of this and because the bag has extra rigidity built in to keep its shape (and to protect the contents) this can make it difficult to access the main compartment while someone is wearing it.

Thoughtful design and quality

I bought this backpack 7 months ago and have flown with it 5 times now plus other travel uses. It fits under the seat fine in a normal 737 and in the smaller prop planes. It is a squishy fit if you have it jam packed. The handles on all 4 sides are very handy, the zipper is very sturdy and easy to use. The laptop slot is perfect. It has held up to Pacific Northwest rain so far, haven't hiked with it though. The straps are comfortable. The side water bottle pockets are tight and can be a tight fit but it holds the bottles in place, no falling out. It fits 2 packing cubes comfortable, the square one and the small one. Can swap the small for the shoe one. Perfect for my short work trips.

great bag BUT

+ fits under most airplane seats
+ generally comfortable for long carry but straps are a bit narrow for the weight you can load
- clamshell opening means there's only 1 zip to unfold whole bag AND to get your laptop. my laptop fell out and got dented
- internal zipper pockets can generally only be reached when unzipping whole bag.
- when on a plane, lack of internal organization makes it a little harder to use under-seat. e.g. you put your ziploc of travel liquids at the top. it has to come out to get anything underneath it like a steamdeck or nintendo switch
- little large for every day work commuting

The 30 L Travel backpack is just the right size, has many thoughtful features, the material and design travel well, and the sage green color is beautiful. Highly recommended.

Far Exceeded Expectations

I was in the market for a bag and was between this 30L from Peak Design and a comparable product from Timbuktu. I am so glad that I went with the Peak Design. Not only has the product held up to several weeks of travel, but it feels so good on my back for long periods of time and looks sharp. It fits under the seats of most airlines and can take a weekend load and more. Highly recommend based on value for money.

Rugged and versatile travel backpack

I've had the backpack about 6 months and have made several trips with it. Love how it's durable and waterproof. I got the optional waist strap which helps transfer the weight to the hips. I like the expansion feature and clamshell opening design. You have to get some kind of interior organizers since it's one big compartment. Holds tons, especially with the expansion zipper opened. Fits nicely under airplane seats. Only slight minus for me is would like the shoulder straps to have a bit more padding. But it's full of great features and lots of ways to grab or hook it onto the handle of a roller bag.
