The Unofficial Duke Canon Solid Cologne Tier List
Okay, so this is my attempt to pay it forward for years of buying great Duke Canon products. It’s hard to tell what’s going to be a good scent when everything is rated 4-5 stars, so…My unhealthy DC buying spree will hopefully help someone here get the right smell for them:
I’m going to split the colognes into two categories: 1. Warm, woodsy and spicy. 2. Light, airy and aquatic. Bay Rum is a wild card (and my favorite) so I will put it in the 1st category. Alright lets go:
Category 1:
S-Tier(Best) 5 star:
1. Bay Rum. It’s sweet,it’s spicy. Think spiced rum and tropical flowers. I live in Florida so it goes great year-round here. It’s also a wild card scent. It’s not like any other on this list.
A+ Tier(Excellent) 4 star:
1. American Lager(Cedarwood/Bud). It’s got a warm spice scent (reminiscent of the Campfire and Gun Powder Soaps) with a cedarwood undertone(undersmell?)
2. Buffalo Trace Bourbon (Oak Barrel). It starts out sweet, with a little spice and has a definite oaky, bourbony(!) smell. But not in a boozehound kind of way.
B Tier(Very Good) 3.5 star:
1. Old Glory (Leaf and Leather). Think leather straps, and cigar humidors. But not fake leather scent and not dookie flavored cigar smoke. Okay, so when I first smelled this I thought, “No way, Jose”. But once I put it on and let it breathe, I really came around. And got compliments on it. If you don’t want warm/woodsy/spicy…and you don’t dig the aquatic smelling Euro-trash scene, this may be your scent.
Category 2:
A+ Tier (Excellent) 4 star:
1. Vetiver Oakmoss Special Issue. Light, sweet, fragrant, clean. Okay, so I don’t know what a vetiver is. And the moss hanging off my oak trees don’t smell like this. This is a sweet smell. Reminds me of going to the club in Tallahassee in my 20’s. Only I wore cheep knockoff crap. This would help you “close the deal” if you know what I mean.
B Tier(Very Good) 3.5 star:
1. Light Musk Neroli Special Issue. Aquatic, clean, almost soapy(?). Again, I couldn’t tell a neroli from a cannoli….But this smell like you just got out of the shower at a really expensive spa, where the soap and shampoo cost more than the GNP of some Eastern European nations. I call it a classy/clean day-trader smell.
2. Birchwood Special Issue. This is fruity and sweet, with and extremely faint woodsy smell in the background. OK, no offense….well this is the internet so someone will be offended…but this is a feminine smelling scent. Maybe more accurately it’s a hers/his scent. I imagine there’s an alternate dimension, where I am a French pastry chef who rides a bicycle with a basket filled with baguettes. In this dimension, I wear Birchwood. However in good old reality I have given this scent to my mom…and she loves it.
S-Tier(Best) 5 star:

I am enjoying this solid cologne. The scent is not over powering and truly pleasant. If you are tired of traditional colognes give this a try.

The Vetiver & Oak Moss and the Light Musk + Neroli are similar. However, I prefer the Light Musk + Neroli because of a hint of tropical citrus. Both are good Fall & Winter scents and I look forward to wearing them later on this year. Regardless, my favorite is the Leaf & Leather with it’s predominant cedar notes and lesser notes of earth tones and the deep woods.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I find it similar to Midnight Swim when I first apply, but after a couple hours has a citrus (I think) aroma. It's not my favorite, but it's still a solid fragrance that I enjoy and keep in my rotation.
