Newer black pads don't hold curl

I used to have great results with the previous classic lash curler that came with purple pads. Now this new version with black pads does nothing for me, the curl won't hold at all!

Curls really well but two different times I’ve used it it has yanked out some of my eyelashes. I’m really disappointed.
