I have been given this toy to review and my review is fully independent and honest.
HotWHEELS MARIOKART Toy Review
The first thing to mention is that the box this comes in is quite big. So little ones looking at a large box to be opened will be impressed by the size of it and the box too has a full size colour image of the product rather than a dull brown box which wouldn't be so exciting to unwrap. Also this is worth bearing in mind should you be collecting this from shops or having it delivered. Approx. 83cm long, 44cm high, 16cm deep.
It took me 20 minutes to unbox and put together with the instructions supplied. It was quite easy to follow and didn’t produce any head scratching moments. The quality of the plastic is high and you can appreciate that a lot of time has gone in to ensuring this all clicks together well and will withstand a good amount of Kids putting it through its paces.
There are two configurations which can be made from the track pieces. One is like a large “S” and looks like a ski-slope design and the other is like a long straight water slide which goes from high to low (which is 2 Metres+ long). It includes two DIE-CAST HotWEELS cars which are very good quality. You can tell these are a superior quality than typical match box cars as the finish is high, they weigh a lot, and they go really fast.
The track has five lanes and cars are positioned at the top and held back by a starting block. Children press the arrow below the cloud to commence a countdown with sound and when the lights turn green they just need to depress the red button. This lowers the starting blocks and the race commences. The cars travel down the track which has curves and wavy pieces and come across a question mark section. This is a neat idea which adds a bit of luck to the game. The car knocks the question mark piece to make it spin and depending on their luck are either stopped in their tracks by a block which comes up with a picture of like a banana or tortoise shell (like in Mario Kart). This option can be switched off by a little lock switch but it is something which adds a little fun to the game.
Shortly after the question marks follows the end of the race which is determined by which car hits the sensor first. It presents the lane number of the winner in a big bright red number above the MARIOKART finish line display. It also makes a winning sound to indicate the end of the race. Those cars left behind or stuck on the questions marks are left weeping. To race again takes no setting up other then placing the cars back up the top of the track and perhaps in different lanes.
I didn’t think this would provide much entertainment as its just cars going down a track BUT the kids loved it and just kept restarting the game. With regards to ages, my 2 year old enjoyed playing it – although he needed some help with knowing what to do, my 7 year old, 9 year old, and even my 13 year old was excited to see the game all set-up and subtlety moved the others out of the way so he could play.
With regards to negatives there was some disappointment when the children learned that there were only two HotWHEELS cars included. There is a smaller image of the ‘two’ cars which are included on the front of the box, but the large picture shows five Mario characters all racing down the track. With this picture and the product featuring five lanes does leave some disappointment. It would be nice to have had all five cars included but if it helps – we used other small match box type cars to compete against the Mario ones. Any long cars get stuck on the bends but if you have a collection of small cars then you should be able to find some to help fill 5 lanes until you purchase the remaining Mario ones, if that’s what you choose to do.
The other negative is the dismantling of this after playing with it. The plastic pieces clip in to each other very well and make for a good sturdy race track, but trying to dismantle these afterwards wasn’t so easy. It kept feeling like the plastic was going to snap with requiring lots of force to separate. For future models I would definitely recommend that an alternative connection method is used even at the cost of taking a little longer to put together. To help alleviate some of the pressure we used precision screwdrivers to gently help ease the catch a little bit and then pulled the pieces apart. Perhaps once it has been taken apart and put together a few times the connections will become easier.
In summary the set is easy and relatively quick to put together, it is made of very good quality pieces of plastic and the cars are equally high quality. The game play is entertaining for a wide age range and for a surprisingly long time but the dismantling method could be improved. This is a really good toy for any fans of Nintendo, Mario, Mario Kart, or HotWHEELS – and remember that the toy comes with Mario and King Boo characters, and the other characters will need to be purchased separately.
I hope this review helps you if so please like it.
I would recommend this to a friend!
